Last week I was invited to speak at the annual conference of the Education Writers Association, with the topic of my panel being the perspective of Asian - Americans
on Affirmative Action policies in college admissions.
To be specific, the case will consider the constitutionality of Michigan's Proposal 2, a voter - approved ban
on affirmative action policies in Michigan universities, which was passed through a ballot vote in November 2006 with a margin of 58 — 42 percent.

on racial preferences was unconstitutional.

on topics including sexual harassment,
affirmative action, instruction of English language learners and school discipline — even
on who might head the agency.

policies that profoundly affect meaningful opportunities for higher education, with a focus
on the nature of persistent moral disagreement over
affirmative action.
On October 15, Askwith Forums presented a discussion of the case before the United States Supreme Court concerning the

policy of the University of Texas at Austin and its implications for higher education.

on the educational benefits of diversity in support of

Using administrative data from the UC from before and after the ban
on race - contingent admissions
policies, we present evidence that UC campuses changed the weight given to SAT scores, grades and family background characteristics after the end of
affirmative action, and that these changes were able to substantially (though far from completely) offset the fall in minority admissions rate after the ban
on affirmative action.
