As schools across the country adopt
blended -
learning models, a few clear trends are settling in, and some groups continue to help schools push the design envelope
on what's possible
for students.
In a piece
for Quartz this past week, I addressed how moving to a
blended learning, competency - based education system in which students advance based
on mastery, not time, could address many of the concerns by better preparing citizens
for the demands ahead.
For example, individual teachers often ask how they can start down the
blended -
learning path if their whole school isn't
on board.
In this overview, I will describe why
blended learning deserves a top place
on any list of trends in corporate training
for 2017, since it is one of the easiest ways
for learning managers to add flexibility and personalization to training while still measuring the ROI
for their
learning projects.
The lack of information
on numbers experiencing
blended learning has created challenges at multiple levels — from understanding if the phenomenon is actually scaling to contextualizing if bumps
on the road, like the recent demise of Amplify, are mere blips or catastrophic events, and from understanding where policymakers and philanthropists can make the most impact to knowing whether the
blended learning that is occurring is a good or bad thing
for students.
The report, produced by the Clayton Christensen Institute, The
Learning Accelerator, and the Ohio Blended Learning Network, suggests that 58 percent of schools that responded have some type of blended learning going on — and for high schools that responded to the survey that number is 71

Similarly, it would be ideal to understand the intensity of use of
blended learning in schools —
for what percentage of the day are students in
blended -
learning environments or how many classes
on average do students take that are
blended — but the survey didn't get at these questions.
Blended learning offers an unprecedented opportunity to create a student - centered education system at scale — one that personalizes
learning for each student in a competency - based environment where students move
on in their
learning upon mastery.
And while the paper can not offer definitive answers
for policymakers and school leaders, it does provide a helpful primer
on the overall economics of online and
blended learning.
Online and
blended learning have the potential to dramatically transform our education system by being able to individualize
for each student's distinct
learning needs (just look at the results from Carpe Diem, KIPP Empower, or Rocketship Education), but whether it does so will have a lot to do with policy — whether we change the incentives and focus not
on merely serving students and micro-managing the inputs, but instead focusing
on the student outcomes and leaving behind an antiquated factory - model system
for a student - centric one.
This includes recommendations suggesting that: primary schools should bring in outside experts to teach coding; all primaries should have 3D printers and design software; secondary schools should be able to teach Computer Science, Design and Technology or another technical / practical subject in place of a foreign language GCSE; the Computer Science GCSE should be taken by at least half of all 16 year olds; young apprenticeships should be reintroduced at 14,
blending a core academic curriculum with hands -
on learning; all students should
learn how businesses work, with schools linked to local employers; schools should be encouraged to develop a technical stream from 14 - 18
for some students, covering enterprise, health, design and hands -
on skills; and that universities should provide part - time courses
for apprentices to get Foundation and Honours degrees.
As the use of technology in schools grows rapidly — whether in
blended -
learning environments,
for project - based
learning, or just because it's the fad du jour — the amount of time students should spend
learning on computers is a point of contention.
Similarly, California's rural - adjacent Grimmway Academy achieves significantly better academic outcomes
for the children of farm workers than local alternatives, with a model centered
on an edible schoolyard and
blended learning.
For example, before I got involved in
blended learning, you might come into my classroom and find me lecturing
on the French Revolution.
The integration of technology has led to a number of developments that have made
learning more accessible, including a focus
on differentiation in the classroom, which involves adopting activities
for mixed abilities, and an increased emphasis
on a
blended learning approach, that sees traditional teaching methods utilised alongside technology.

Combining the best of both worlds,
blended learning prepares your students
for a virtual future while still equipping them with solid traditional skills (think of the heated discussion
on whether we need cursive or not).
Other techniques that may fall into «less relevant» include such ones as «Stretch It,» which is designed to help «meet students where they are and push them in a way that's directly responsive to what they've shown they can already do,» and becomes more embedded in a
blended -
learning environment; «Wait Time,» which is designed to help all students have a moment to answer a question, but isn't relevant when each child is working at her own pace online; «Do Now» to help focus students
on a particular
learning activity when they enter the classroom; and several tips around varying pacing
for the entire classroom, which become more irrelevant when each student has a unique pacing schedule.
