In some states,
interest on bonds issued by that state, and the municipalities within it, are also exempt from that state's income taxes.

Indeed, if rates rise gradually, the interest payments
on a bond fund will increase as older bonds mature and newer ones are purchased with higher coupons.

That's why investors need to make decisions
based on a bond fund's yield to maturity.
Bond investors do their own due diligence, and do not
depend on bond ratings for their analysis.
This may not be palatable to fixed income investors, especially those who
rely on their bond portfolio as a source of relative safety and stability.
The concept is basically this: You'll have a capital
loss on bonds if bought at premium and held to maturity.
I prefer to keep duration very short because my asset allocation is very aggressive so I'm not willing to take risk
on the bond side by going for a longer duration either.
