Given how little Americans know about their government and politics, even civic education that is focused merely
on civic knowledge faces formidable challenges.

These and other studies have created a lasting professional consensus that, in general, the scholastic curriculum has some effects
on the civic knowledge of students, but little or no effect on their civic values.

on which
civic elites would side with the union.
In an essay that is sure to provoke both those who want schools to advance patriotic values and those who preach social change, Murphy argues that public schools should focus

knowledge and skills necessary to be intellectually engaged citizens, while remaining neutral
on questions of
civic values.
But our results are consistent with a broader research literature finding that private schools have largely neutral or positive impacts
on civic values such as political tolerance, voluntarism, political
