In the 1960s, the German entomologist Willi Hennig invented
cladistics, a method of determining which branches go where
on the tree of life.
And subsequently an organizing system,
cladistics, developed that based its groupings not
on superficial or structural similarities but
on what was known about its evolutionary ancestry.
