Industry advocates often blame the Obama administration's «war
on coal,» specifically two signature policies to reduce fossil fuels» carbon
emissions — the
Clean Power Plan, which never went into effect before the Trump administration moved to eliminate it altogether, and the Paris Climate Agreement, from which the United States has withdrawn.
«The
Clean Energy Jobs and Climate Agenda released today will continue New York's path towards a more sustainable future by reducing harmful carbon
emissions, ending New York's reliance
on coal, and advancing offshore wind, energy efficiency, and energy storage.
Cuomo has pushed in recent years to adopt new efforts aimed at reducing
emissions and shifting the state toward the majority use of
clean and renewable power in the coming years, including an effort to close
coal - burning power plants by 2020, promoting offshore wind projects and developing a
clean energy standard to have the state
on 50 percent renewable energy by 2030.
Though in October 2009 Cameron pledged to introduce rules requiring new power stations to be as
clean as a modern gas plant, he reneged
on this in November 2010 by allowing new
coal plants to pump almost double that level of carbon
emissions,
Green groups have lobbied Stefanik to help retain the funding for the program, and have fretted about the Trump administration's rollbacks
on environmental policies, including pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Accord and Pruitt's decision to repeal the

Trump has also promised to «lift restrictions
on the production» of shale, oil, natural gas and
clean coal — such a move would increase the market share of fossil - fuel power, and could drive
emissions up.
During that same period, these companies spent $ 45 million
on ads for

on the Congress to fully fund my Administration's Future Gen program to build
clean coal power plants that will reduce our competitivity with foreign sources of oil and increase our commitment to carbon
emissions.»
As we know here,
on this blog, until technology allows for carbon dioxide to be removed from the
emissions of
coal - fired power plants, the term «
clean coal» is a bit like the term «healthy smoking.»

emissions.
Experiences in developed nations such as Japan could provide good examples for achieving public consensus

on the right track, is China doing the right thing by

coal stations, to stop the SO2
emissions?
Regulation of carbon
emissions from the power sector under provisions of the
Clean Air Act depends almost entirely
on the Environmental Protection Agency's determination that cheap natural gas generation is the «best available» alternative to
coal power plants.
In May, Immelt announced that G.E. is doubling its annual R&D spending
on clean technology to $ 1.5 billion — developing a dizzying array of wind turbines, hybrid - engine trains, state - of - the - art jet engines, zero -
emission coal plants and superefficient home appliances.
While imposing no effective measures to cut our
emissions now, the Government has put its faith in the development of «
clean coal» technologies and nuclear power, the most important features of which are that neither would have a significant effect
on our greenhouse
emissions for at least 15 - 20 years.
Brad Plumer: In the draft version of the
Clean Power Plan, each state has its own individual goal for
emissions reductions, based
on what EPA thinks is possible given the prospects for
coal - to - gas switching, renewables, efficiency.
The withdrawal of the
clean power plan is the latest in a series of moves by Trump and Pruitt to dismantle Obama's legacy
on fighting climate change, including the delay or roll back of rules limiting levels of toxic pollution in chimney
emissions and waste water discharges from
coal - burning power plants.
The worsening of the picture, ironically, is due to a projected
cleansing of the atmosphere in coming decades of other
emissions from fuel burning that have a cooling influence
on climate — specifically the veil of tiny particles of sulfates from unfiltered burning of
coal and oil that contribute to smog and acid rain.
President Trump visited the EPA headquarters
on March 28 and before an audience of coalminers, signed an executive order to overturn the
Clean Power Plan to curb carbon dioxide
emissions from
coal - fired power plants, and to allow coalmining leases
on federal lands.
A few noted skepticism of climate science, saying carbon dioxide is «part of the cycle of life,» but for many opponents of the
Clean Power Plan, the argument wasn't whether climate change was real but whether the plan's target
on reducing
emissions from
coal power would effectively slow global warming.
Depending
on the electricity source of the local grid, even the most efficient electric car could be charged by
coal or natural gas, or by hydropower (no combustion
emissions, but linked to increased methane
emissions), or nuclear energy (which might qualify as
clean or low - carbon energy, but which also has its own environmental bugaboos and massive costs to consider)
We welcome the leadership of individual countries to spearhead efforts among interested countries to advance actions
on technologies such as energy efficiency; solar energy; smart grids; carbon capture, use, and storage; advanced vehicles; high - efficiency and lower -
emissions coal technologies; bio-energy; and other
clean technologies.
Then they say «Through a $ 50 Billion investment in new
clean coal technologies, today's
coal based generating fleet is already 70 %
cleaner based
on regulated
emissions per unit of energy produced.»
Therefore, no data correction was warranted to account for the small effect that
coal cleaning had
on emission factors.
Just like new designs for
coal power plants are very green so has progress been made
on cleaning up diesel

At the heart of it all is whether you just consider smokestack
emissions —
on which basis natural gas is about 50 %
cleaner than
coal — or include all the
emissions from the entire national gas production and distribution process.
Much of the renewable subsidy industry justified in the name of these flawed models causes net grid
emissions of CO2 to be much worse for much longer than simply replacing
coal with
clean low carbon gas and long term inevitable base load zero carbon nuclear
on the grid, unsubsidised — but that's only a generation engineering fact from the laws of physics.
This matters because the climate change debate has been hi - jacked,
emissions made worse by the net effects of renewables for a fast lobbyist buck in fact, driven by ignorance and misleading attacks that lump
clean low carbon gas with dirty high carbon
coal, and old school anti-nuclear activists who oppose nuclear generation
on factualy spurious grounds, while it is in physics and engineering fact by far the best solution
on any measure, through promoting irrational fear unsupported in any area of the facts and proven physics they deceive the unknowing about with simply false or msleading «sience».
Murray, 77, founder of the largest privately held
coal mining company in the U.S., told Monday's Guardian he is confident the president will follow through
on promises to scrap the
clean power plan, former President Barack Obama's signature climate change plan, which was designed to cut carbon
emissions from the power sector by 32 percent by 2030.
