I actually don't routinely use
clickers in my beginner obedience classes, for this reason — these behaviors are easy to
train using praise and food rewards alone, and I find that adding

clicker can be confusing for novice dog owners who are already struggling to manage the leash and treat bag without dropping everything
on the floor.

I did, however, (
on my own and without having read up
on clicker training, marker words, or any of that) come up with a system when Jack was a puppy where I would use «good»
in a calmer, slightly upbeat voice to mean «you are
on the right track» and a much more enthusiastic «Good boy, goooood boyyyy» with a bit of a praise party when he nailed it.
The turn
on the forehand was my first attempt at using
clicker training in the classic «shaping» method.
If he's reactive to certain things
in particular (like people or other dogs), then you can also work
on those specific triggers — stand at a distance and click and treat (if he's
clicker trained, verbal praise is okay if not) every time he sees a person (or dog, if that's what you're working
on).

In clicker training the whole concept is based
on two simple principles: mark and reward the behaviors that you like, and withhold (don't reward) the behaviors that you are trying to eliminate.
We all agree
on the benefits of using
clicker training principles (regardless of if you use a
clicker, verbal marker, whistle, etc.) for marking wanted behaviors, however where the discussions come
in is when signals are used to mark the moment that the dog failed to perform or missed, some dog trainers tend to use signals to inform their dogs that they have failed, still others say that these such signals are not necessary or even that they produce unnecessary stress, etc..
