The agency chose these
actions because it said they all meet these criteria: They can result in significant near - term emissions reductions, do not curb economic growth, rely only
on existing technologies and proven policies and produce significant benefits beyond
climate change mitigation.
It's useful to think of this as an example of Bayesian priors in
action — given that 99 % of the criticisms we hear about
climate science are bogus or based
on deep confusions about what modeling is for, scepticism is an appropriate first response, but
because we are actually scientists, not shills, we are happy to correct real errors — sometimes they will matter, and sometimes they won't.
122, Bob (Sphaerica): I think that I more or less agree with you, except that I haven't seen the tiniest bit of

The vulnerability is almost entirely the result of fast - paced, cost - cutting development patterns in tornado hot zones, and even if there were a greenhouse - tornado connection,
actions that constrain greenhouse - gas emissions, while wise in the long run, would not have a substantial influence

Yet a leading U.S. Senate advocate of legislative
action on climate seems to be starting off like a sprinter, perhaps
because his legislation is pegged to estimates of the Social Cost of Carbon that don't account for the possibility that
climate change will turn out to be catastrophically costly.
• $ 365,000 to Foundation for Research
on Economics and the Environment (FREE) which advocates against taking
action on climate change
because warming is «inevitable» and expensive to address.
We're not offering a «counter-claim» about the science,
because our position is that even the concrete, incontrovertible, unassailable fact of human influence
on global warming and
climate change does not, by itself, make a case for
action.
Because around 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions originate with EU nations, getting those governments to take stronger
action, faster, would have a big impact
on curbing
climate change's worst impacts.
We believe it does not
because those causing
climate change have had clear ethical duties to reduce the threat of
climate change once they were put
on notice that their
actions were likely putting others at great risk.
A close reading of national policies shows that many countries are taking
action on climate not
because they have made legally binding international commitments, but
because they want to.
Both Abbott and Harper are strongly opposed to taking serious
action on climate change
because they see it as not good for the quest for ever more short - term profits.
But possibly
because Trump never made any promises related to revoking the USEPA Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Endangerment Finding (EF), there has been no public announcement of any proposed EPA
action on this, the most critical step needed to bring sanity back to
climate policy.
I accept a level of hypocrisy
because to engage with every injustice all the time is not only to open ourselves up to way too much suffering but can lead to a form of self - disarmament (consider for example the committed
climate activist who won't use fossil fuel transportation
on principle and therefore can't get to the
action to shut down the coal plant — who comes out losing?)
The second most frequent argument made by opponents of
climate change policies are assertions that governments should not take
action on climate change
because adverse impacts have not been sufficiently scientifically proven.
The letter calls
on youth to show up and join the
action because of the risks presented by the Kinder Morgan pipeline, the need for urgent
climate action, and
because of the role youth and young people played in winning Justin Trudeau his mandate in 2015.
It says
action is required
on all fronts
because no single technology or sector can solve
climate change alone.
Such an
action would definitely cut down
on human caused CO2 emisions but it would have no real effect
on climate because the
climate sensivity of CO2 is zero.
The opponents of
climate change policies have largely succeeded in opposing proposed
climate change law and policy by claiming that government
action on climate change should be opposed
because: (1) it will impose unacceptable costs
on national economics or specific industries and destroy jobs, (2) there is too much scientific uncertainty to warrant government
action, or (3) it would be unfair and ineffective for nations like the United States to adopt expensive
climate policies as long as China or India fail to adopt serious greenhouse gas emissions reductions policies.
We republish this article with permission of the author
because it contains a number of excellent points about the ethical dimensions of
climate change particularly in regard to who should be understood to be responsible for the failure of the United States to take adequate
action on climate change.
Are you aware that the claim frequently made by opponents of US and other national
action on climate change that if the country acts to reduce its ghg emissions and China or other developing country does not act it will make no difference
because climate change will still happen is not true
because ghg emissions from nations exceeding their fair share of safe global emissions are responsible for rising atmospheric concentrations of ghgs?
One of the reasons the world is now running out of time to prevent dangerous
climate change is because fossil fuel companies and their allies in the US Congress has prevented the United States from taking serious action on climate change since 1992 when the George H. And I think the scientists in question were * well aware * of the uncertainties, and didn't care,
because getting immediate political
action on climate change was everything to them.

In a sharp change from its cautious approach in the past, the National Academy of Sciences
on Wednesday called for taxes
on carbon emissions, a cap - and - trade program for such emissions or some other strong
action to curb runaway global warming.Such
actions, which would increase the cost of using coal and petroleum — at least in the immediate future — are necessary
because «
climate change is occurring, the Earth is warming... concentrations of carbon dioxide are increasing, and there are very clear fingerprints that link [those effects] to humans,» said Pamela A. Matson of Stanford University, who chaired one of five panels organized by the academy at the request of Congress to look at the science of
climate change and how the nation should respond.
When you argue that a nation emitting high levels of ghgs need not adopt
climate change policies
because there is scientific uncertainty about adverse
climate change impacts, are you arguing that a nation need not take
action on climate change until scientific uncertainties are resolved given that waiting to resolve all scientific uncertainties before
action is taken may very likely make it too late to prevent catastrophic
climate change harms to millions of people around the world?
Arguments in opposition to
action on climate change based upon the claim that the United States acting alone will not significantly reduce the threat of
climate change fails any ethical test
because all nations have a duty to act to reduce their emissions to their fair share without regard to what other nations do.
Though scientific consensus must always be open to responsible skepticism given: (a) the strength of the consensus
on this topic, (b) the enormity of the harms predicted by the consensus view, (c) an approximately 30 year delay in taking
action that has transpired since a serious
climate change debate began in the United States in the early 1980s, (d) a delay that has made the problem worse while making it more difficult to achieve ghg emissions reductions necessary to prevent dangerous
climate change
because of the steepness of reductions now needed, no politician can ethically justify his or her refusal to support
action on climate change based upon a personal opinion that is not supported by strong scientific evidence that has been reviewed by scientific organizations with a wide breadth of interdisciplinary scientific expertise.
So, yeah, we have to be aware of what's going
on,
because we do need to take
actions to slow down
climate change, but it's going to take time.
If our polluting activities have nothing to do with the hurricanes than why France's President Francois Hollande during its recent visit in the Philippines called for more
actions in order to stop
climate change
because he said that Typhoon Hagupit and Typhoon Hayan which devastated the region become that big and dangerous due to our polluting activities which brings the planet
on the brink of disaster.
«When individuals offset their carbon footprint through projects like CDI's Trees of Hope, they're not only taking
action on their unavoidable, personal contribution to
climate change, but they're also addressing challenges like food security and education
because many farmers include income - generating crop trees in their plantings and use their carbon finance earnings to pay for their children's schooling fees.
This speech also acknowledged that it is probably too late to avoid the need of nations to adapt to
climate change's adverse impacts. This is so
because even if aggressive
action it taken
on climate change around the world, some adverse
climate change impacts are inevitable.
And many experts say they don't expect the rest of the world to slack off
on aggressive
climate action simply
because of the U.S. election.
The IPCC probably falls into these claims
because these are weather events which can not be predicted
on climate time scales and most prominent advocates of
action (Hansen, Schmidt, Schneider) and many IPCC authors lack an education in meteorology.
In a world that is in dire need of
action on climate change some are denying that it is happening, others want to support mining and the fossil fuel industry for short - term economic or selfish reasons, still others are in favour of renewable energy anywhere other than near them, while Dr Pierpont, Ms Laurie and those like them are slowing adoption of sustainable energy
because of ignorance and delusion.
In summary, Monbiot believes that the reason that the masses have not risen up to demand
action on climate change is
because they have been hoodwinked by a conspiracy to subvert the public understanding of the issues, paid for by vast corporate interests.
«
Because the government is sort of in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry and you have a core of
climate deniers that threaten the prime minister's leadership, there's a political imperative to not take serious
action on climate change,» says Dr Casule.
Earth Day Network, the group founded by the organizers of the first Earth Day to coordinate the annual day of
action that builds and invigorates the environmental movement, said that this theme was chosen
because of the need to highlight the mounting impact of
climate change
on individuals around the world.
