Köln / Hamburg 12 May, 2014 — The German computing center for climate research DKRZ (Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum) and Bull have signed a contract for the delivery of a petaflops - scale supercomputer, as well as cooperation
on climate research simulation.

Research reported earlier this year hinted that events in the stratosphere might directly affect the oceans, but those findings were based
on a single
climate model and a computer
simulation that modeled the stratosphere for a relatively short 260 years.
The biological and environmental

«Our temperature estimates and the NCAR
simulations were within one - quarter of one degree Fahrenheit,
on average, for the last 11,000 years,» says Shuman, as he pointed to a graph that included a black line for his group's
climate research temperature and a gray line that represents the computer
simulations.
Dr Stephen Grimes of Plymouth University, who initiated the
research project, highlighted the
climate changes that must have caused this increase in sediment erosion and transport — «We have
climate model
simulations of the effect of warming
on rainfall during the PETM event, and they show some changes in the average amounts of rainfall, but the largest change is how this rainfall is packaged up — it's concentrated in more rapid, extreme events — larger and bigger storms.»

However, satellite observations are notably cooler in the lower troposphere than predicted by
climate models, and the
research team in their paper acknowledge this, remarking: «One area of concern is that
on average...
simulations underestimate the observed lower stratospheric cooling and overestimate tropospheric warming... These differences must be due to some combination of errors in model forcings, model response errors, residual observational inhomogeneities, and an unusual manifestation of natural internal variability in the observations.»
But the main concern I have is that models and
simulations on the global
climate are used as facts instead used as guidelines for further
research.

But Christopher Essex, a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Western Ontario, who has become a prominent critic of
climate models, said Wednesday that more
research on climate simulation, while a useful enterprise, was unlikely to produce much more clarity than these efforts provide now.
This
research, which was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Swiss National Science Foundation, is the first time that summer heat and its dependence
on the rate of greenhouse gas emissions have been studied in a

simulation.
Researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in the United Kingdom report in the journal Nature Plants that a match of satellite data, computer
simulations and
research on the ground shows that — even under severe
climate change — coffee growers could relocate to higher ground, while those who could not do that could diversify to take advantage of the changing conditions.
