Studying with David Pearson and others at the Center for the Study of Reading at the University of Illinois, I attended graduate school when research
on comprehension instruction was just beginning, and cognitive psychology provided the foundation.

on first grade teachers» reading
comprehension and vocabulary
instruction, their knowledge of these areas, and
on the
comprehension and vocabulary achievement of their students.
New elementary school teachers who were well - prepared in preservice programs to teach reading expressed greater confidence in their knowledge and skills, fostered richer literacy environments in their classrooms, and helped their pupils achieve higher levels of reading
comprehension than did other teachers, according to the National Commission

Teachers do need to customize their
instruction to ensure that all children are mastering essential content, but «custom resources aligned to their particular context, interests, and learning needs» is a siren song drawing us away from the foundation of shared knowledge
on which

comprehension instruction, eight different instructional practices were observed and coded: doing a picture walk; asking for a prediction; asking a text - based question; asking a higher level, aesthetic response question; asking children to write in response to reading (including writing answers to questions about what they had read); doing a story map; asking children to retell a story; and working

Such research would, in a single effort, examine school level factors (e.g., building climate, home - school relations, schoolwide organization for reading, collaborative efforts) while examining classroom / teacher factors (e.g., time spent in reading
instruction, time
on task, student engagement, approaches to word recognition and
comprehension instruction, teachers» interactive styles).
