At the October 1996 meeting, the CFA Board unanimously approved this guidance statement

If — after knowing the facts — you still have your heart set
on a declawed kitty, please choose to adopt a cat who has already been declawed.

Declawing refers to the surgery performed
on cats to remove their claws to prevent them from scratching.
In spite of the lengths and expense to which some people will go to
declaw their cats, many
declawed cats are found abandoned
on the street.
The most valid justification for
declawing is to prevent injury or infection to a member of the household who may be elderly with thin skin,
on blood thinners, or whose immune system is compromised.
Even cats that have been
declawed will put their paws
on an inviting surface and scratch away.
Some instances when
declawing may be necessary might include cats scratching elderly owners or those owners
on debilitating medications or situations where the cat may lose his or her home unless the procedure is performed.
Most people aren't aware that
declawing does not simply remove the claws; the traditional process actually involves amputating the first joint
on each toe.
Cats qualify based
on health and age and the absence of discrete disqualifying factors, like being
declawed or having a known history of life as an indoor cat.
If you are planning to add a cat to your feline family, focus
on compatible personalities, not whether one cat is
declawed and another is not.
