In gauging the mix of insights and discussions in this plenary and throughout the meeting, I saw fresh echoes of an important 2003 paper
on ecosystem resilience by Thomas Elmqvist of Stockholm University and others.
On the other hand, ecosystem productivity had either regained or exceeded its normal level a year after a climate event, regardless of plant diversity, showing that biodiversity has no effect
on ecosystem resilience, at least on annual timescales.

It is important to capitalise
on good storage volumes and environmental water availability in wetter years in order to build ecological
resilience — the ability of river, wetland and floodplain
ecosystems to withstand and recover from the impact of future droughts.
In this article, we investigate trends in global coffee distributions and cultivation practices, and we review the potential impacts of these geographic and management changes
on biodiversity,
ecosystem services,
resilience to climate change, and sustainable livelihoods.
First, they help determine the
resilience of
ecosystems on land and at sea, which in turn impact whether larger boundaries, such as climate change, are transgressed.
In this new study, the researchers therefore used data from 46 experiments
on grassland plant diversity in order to test the hypothesis of a positive effect of biodiversity
on the resistance and
resilience of
ecosystems to various climate events, from drought to extreme rainfall.
Until now, theoretical ecological studies
on the response of
ecosystems to various perturbations have focused
on the
resilience of such
ecosystems.
A similar survey that looked at expert - recommended papers
on ecosystems found examples of
resilience in 85 percent of them.
Singer, Stella, Roberts and Caylor will develop a toolkit and provide quantitative support for land and water conservation management to promote the sustainability and
resilience of riparian forest
ecosystems located
on DOD lands.
The functional integrity and
resilience of the ecological processes,
ecosystems, and biological diversity that is the basis of all life
on earth, respecting which entails a realization of the ecological limits within which human economies and societies must restrict themselves.7
These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, policy advice and activities
on air quality, water quality,
resilience, floodplain management,
ecosystem management, noise, emissions, and bicycle and pedestrian transportation.
Moore Reef - Surrounds The Surrounds
on Moore Reef offers a great insight into the
resilience of Mother Nature and the life cycle of the fragile
ecosystems that make up the reefs of the world.
Current and likely future impacts of global warming
on ecosystems and human activities are also considered, including biodiversity, system buffering and
resilience, and regional inequality and vulnerability.
We recently ran a story
on a permaculture project in a city «hood, but you might like a tad more
on just what it is: «Permaculture (permanent agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive
ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and
resilience of natural
ecosystems.»
And in any case, this does not erase the shockingly unjustifiable pair of statements you wrote: I'm not worried about the
resilience of Arctic
ecosystems and not worried about the system tipping into an irreversibly slushy state
on time scales relevant to today's policy debates.
But even as I push for an energy quest that limits climate risk, I'm not worried about the
resilience of Arctic
ecosystems and not worried about the system tipping into an irreversibly slushy state
on time scales relevant to today's policy debates.
If the impact of such a change is
on the
resilience rather than the productivity of the system, the damage may not be evident until much later, when the
ecosystem collapses for a seemingly unrelated cause.
Each and every day seven billion of us hope to feed ourselves, slake our thirst, and wrest our energy needs from the Earth, even as we strive to protect the
ecosystem services
on which we depend and build
resilience to Earth's hazards.
