While I hadn't originally based my valuation
on the
free last
night award benefit offered by Club Carlson's co-branded Visa cards, I realized that for me, those
free nights were the most valuable aspect of the program.
Depending
on which card you go with, and how you choose to redeem your points, the welcome offer can get travelers as many as six to nine
free award nights.
You also get a
free weekend
night rewards when you use your card to spend $ 15,000
on eligible purchases in a calendar year, and a second weekend
night award when you reach a total of $ 60,000 in purchases.

Hilton Honors Silver confers minimal hotel stay benefits, but it opens up the 5th

Schlappig also saved money
on travel by taking advantage of Citi's new hotel benefit, which
awards Prestige cardholders a
free night's stay if they book a room for four or more
nights.
The deal gets even better because with Starwood you get the fifth

For a week's stay
on the island, Marriott's property would require an eye watering 240,000 points, which is actually a discount from the normal daily rate because travelers receive a 5th
night free when booking 4
award nights with Marriott.
As faithful readers know, in the next few days the Club Carlson program will undergo two catastrophic devaluations: co-branded credit card holders will lose the
free last
night on award reservations of two or more
nights; and a vast swath of Club Carlson's lame mid-tier properties are being bumped up to their highest rewards category, and will cost 70,000 Gold Points per
night.
Ultimately, I split the difference: since the last
night is
free on all Club Carlson
award reservations separated by at least one day, I booked our first two and last two
nights in New Orleans at the Country Inn & Suites, and the middle three
nights at the Hilton New Orleans / St.

free night awards are just 2,000 to 3,000 points a
night depending
on the day of the week.

Fortunately, if you want to redeem at a hotel that costs more than your
free night, you can choose the pay the difference in cash rather than leave money
on the table or be forced to hunt for one where you could use the exact value of the
award.
Also keep in mind that SPG, Hilton, and Marriott offer a «5th
night free»
on award redemptions.

The ability to buy points with a 20 % discount could be useful but I don't think I'd get as much use out of the 4th
night free on award stays as I'd like to — my IHG stays tend to be 2 - 3
nights in length and a 4th
night would, ordinarily, be more than I needed... I'd be staying somewhere for the sake of staying.
Another awesome redemption strategy for those who do not like to mattress run while
on vacation is SPG's 5th
night free award.
Additionally, Hilton and SPG offer a fifth
night free on award bookings of four consecutive
nights, so sometimes reserving a stay from the same account equals more
free nights.
The 4th
night free on award stays would be a very nice bonus to have and, if you can use this at one of the better IHG properties, it would save you 70,000 every time you used it — that's a value of $ 280.
Free parking
on award nights for top - tier elites is a good perk and could save guests quite a bit of money
Lastly, there doesn't appear to be any mention of the 10 % points rebate current cardholders get every year and I suspect that this has been offset by the «4th
night free»
on award stays.
