Well, I just wanted to note that AA doesn't pass
on fuel surcharges with any of their partners except British Airways.
It is actually a good price, although the disadvantage of using FB instead of AA or USA is that they do still pass
on fuel surcharges with most airlines.
Fortunately, when flying to Paris you won't have to deal with anything like the Air Passenger Duty (APD) fee that you get hit with on your trips to London, but you will want to keep an eye
on fuel surcharges with each carrier.

American Airlines does not charge a
fuel surcharge on any flights, EXCEPT
on partner flights
with British Airways or Iberia.
You will want to be careful who you fly
with to avoid
fuel surcharges, but flights
on Air Berlin and Aer Lingus to Europe will generally have low
surcharges.
Hot Tip: Flying to Asia also carries lower
fuel surcharges compared
with flying directly to Japan
on ANA — even when your flights to Asia go through Japan!
Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, and ANA almost always impose
fuel surcharges on award tickets booked
with their miles.
If you have these miles, I recommend you think about trips you can take
on routes that don't have
fuel surcharges to begin
with.
Aeroplan award redemptions are hit
with fuel surcharges (YQ)
on certain flights, including those operated by Air Canada.
Using a Star Alliance partner award, anywhere in North America to Hawaii
on United is 17,500 miles each way for economy class or 30,000 miles each way for first class (
on a two - cabin plane)
with no
fuel surcharges.
However, there is a way around these
fuel surcharges if you're willing to do some digging and spend some time
on the phone
with an American Airlines booking agent.
Fortunately, you won't be hit
with any
fuel surcharges on either of these bookings.
With Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia, things get more expensive because many foreign carriers impose
fuel surcharges on award tickets.
Even if I want to fly Virgin Atlantic, I'll book it
with Delta miles and avoid the
fuel surcharges, and I'll use up whatever Flying Club miles I currently have left
on Delta tickets.
This would result in hundreds in extra
fuel surcharges when compared
with flying
on American or other OneWorld carriers like AirBerlin, Aer Lingus and others, and as such is to be avoided.
Sometimes, certain airlines have higher taxes, certain destinations have higher taxes, or you'll be charged higher
fuel surcharges depending
on what airline rewards program you book
with.
You can use United miles to redeem
with any Star Alliance partner just like you would
on United itself, and without any
fuel surcharges.
If you're desperate to fly
on Virgin Atlantic, you're better off doing it
with Delta miles and skipping the
fuel surcharges.

BA will also impose higher
fuel surcharges on most longer flights, but you can avoid those
with shorter distance flights.
ANA Mileage Club often passes
on fuel surcharges when you book award flights, but these
surcharges are not required when booking
with their Star Alliance partner United Airlines.
Avios partners
with Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, making it easy to redeem your Avios points
on any of these carriers for flights in North America without paying
fuel surcharges.
When redeeming
with American, it's also possible to avoid the prohibitive
fuel surcharges that BA levies
on its own flights.
Fuel surcharges are going to be significant if you want to fly British Airways in First Class, but using your miles is still a great way to access a ticket that would otherwise cost $ 5,000 or more one - way — especially if you can pair your redemption
with a Travel Together Ticket earned by spending
on British Airway's co-branded credit card.
Some things to bear in mind are that you will want to avoid flying
on British Airways operated flights as those come
with very heavy
fuel surcharges (often more than a cash fare would have cost you).
Virgin is not the best use of rewards points — adding heavy
fuel surcharges to flights across the Atlantic — but you may be able to find good values
on domestic flights
with some of Virgin's airline partners.
Alitalia charges large
fuel surcharges on its own flights and partner airline flights, but, if you do some searching, you can find good values despite the
surcharges and you can sometimes get a lower
fuel surcharge by booking a partner airline through Alitalia than directly
with that airline.
You'll need to look out for
fuel surcharges on some flights, as well as navigate a phone reservations line to book flights
with partner airlines.

I originally started collecting them thinking I'd suck up the
fuel surcharges flying Boston to London
on Virgin Atlantic Upper Class
with good award availability.

Unfortunately, I don't see Star Alliance partners like Asiana, Air China, and Thai Airways
on the no
fuel surcharge list, so if you end up booking
with them, you'll probably have to pay some fees.
Unfortunately,
fuel surcharges will still be imposed
on partner bookings, but you can always avoid or mitigate those fees by flying
with United.
However, there are some sweet spots like a North America to Hawaii economy award
on United for only 35,000 miles
with no
fuel surcharges.
There are no
fuel surcharges for flights
on Delta
with Virgin Atlantic miles, but one - way redemptions are not allowed.
As stated, ANA will pass
on heavy
fuel surcharges with many of its partners but United is an exception.
On these routes,
fuel surcharges can be an issue
with Aeroplan but you can get around them by booking
with the following airlines:
Generally, when going to Europe it's recommended to use Avios
on partner airlines in order to avoid the high
fuel surcharges that you get hit
with on British Airways when flying through London.
It's not very well known to a lot of travelers but it offers some of the best redemptions to South America
on Star Alliance partners and you can book those awards
with no
fuel surcharges.
