A spiral
galaxy (same goes for a spherical planet, a
galaxy cluster, a comet) is
shaped by forces big and small that rely
on the physical properties of matter, energy, dark energy, and dark matter.
These peculiar
galaxies are like a natural experiment played out
on a cosmic scale and by cataloguing them, astronomers can better understand the physical processes that warp spiral and elliptical
galaxies into new
shapes.
Such mergers could give themselves away by their effect
on the
shapes of the black holes» parent
galaxies, and in infrared and ultraviolet afterglows.

galaxies transform into a huge variety of
shapes as they interact, some of which resemble familiar things
on Earth.
But the
galaxies pull strongly
on one another via gravity, distorting their
shapes and ripping stars and gas clouds off each other to form so - called tidal tails.
Astronomers are now using the largest existing telescopes
on the ground and in space to better assess the composition, size and
shape of the newly discovered ancient
galaxies.
«This new insight may force us to rethink the whole cosmological context of how
galaxies burn out early
on and evolve into local elliptical -
shaped galaxies,» said study leader Sune Toft of the Dark Cosmology Center at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

galaxies — in the area, as well as a blob -

on the
galaxy's outskirts should also depend
on the
shape of the
galaxy's dark matter halo.

shaped galaxy was getting
on a bit, it had a svelte spiral figure to be proud of.

shaped)
galaxy seen almost edge
on.
The elliptical
galaxy's mass = k × (velocity dispersion) 2 × (the distance the stars are from the
galaxy center) / G, where k is a factor that depends
on the
shape of the
galaxy and the angle the
galaxy is from Earth.
Studying the effect of dark energy
on large - scale structure involves measuring subtle distortions in the
shapes of
galaxies arising from the bending of space by intervening matter, a phenomenon known as «weak lensing.»
For example, if the dark matter blob were
shaped like an American football standing
on its end, it could cut right through the center of the
galaxy.
With current observations suggesting that dark energy comprises more than 70 percent of the matter - energy density of the present - day universe, astronomers say that measuring the apparent
shapes and the distribution of
galaxies in the Universe will constrain the nature of dark energy and allow them to examine whether the general theory of relativity is still a valid description of gravitation
on scales of billions of light years.
