The floating mountains of ice — some of which start out Connecticut -
sized or larger — scraped up bits of rock when they were parts of
glaciers on land.
Based
on the
sizes of the formations, Scanlon could estimate how much lava would have interacted with the
glacier.
The figures opposite and above show that latitude, terminal environment (calving or ending
on land) and
size exert the strongest controls
on glacier shrinkage, with the more northerly, land - terminating, smaller (less than 5 km2)
glaciers shrinking fastest.
Unlike the great ice sheet of Antarctica, the Greenland ice sheet is melting both
on its surface and also at outlet
glaciers that drain the ice sheet's mass through deep fjords, where these
glaciers extend out into the ocean and often terminate in dynamic calving fronts, giving up gigaton -
sized icebergs at times.
The other photographs
on view, of
glaciers in Iceland taken from 2001 to 2008, illustrate the effects of ultraviolet light
on this landscape over time: the icebergs appear dramatically diminished in
size in the later photographs.
On Greenland, an ice - covered island three times the
size of Texas, once - stable
glaciers are now melting at a quickening rate.
Ice has a huge albedo compared to everything else, and represents an enormous reservoir of cold fresh water deposited
on continent -
sized chunks of the globe (not to mention winter snowfall in regions where it isn't «permanent» and
glaciers where it is).
The Mernhild study identified this slow rate compared to the outlet
glaciers and, based
on mass balance observations, that the current surface mass balance can only support a
glacier at most one - third its current
size.
«This allows us to get a better picture of projected regional ice volume change and potential impacts
on local water supplies, and changes in
glacier size distribution,» Radic said.

Reports from scientists monitoring the situation indicate that a chuck of ice the
size of Manhattan (100 sq. kilometers) is about the fall off, with the suspected cause being at least partially to do with increasing flows of warm water moving up the coast due to the region's changing climate, New Scientist reports.Large chunks of ice break off the Petermann
glacier all the time, but with a chunk this
size breaking away — this 5 billion tons of ice is about half of the
glacier's annual flow — it's unlikely that current rates of snowfall elsewhere
on the
glacier will be able to make up for it.
Furthermore, the records of Late Holocene
glacier variability in Scandinavia show that
glaciers were reduced in
size c. ad 900 — 1000 and that a warm climate prompted the development of soils
on the
glacier forfields (Karlén and Denton 1975; Worsley and Alexander 1976; Griffey and Matthews 1978; Matthews 1980; Karlén 1982; Hormes et al. 2004).
