The lack
of a responsible government agency
on global climate change explains the reasons why contrasts between scientific peer review and the processes
of the popular press are greatest with the
climate change issues.
GSA also supports statements
on the
global climate change issue made by the joint national academies
of science (June 2005), American Geophysical Union (December, 2003), and American Chemical Society (2004).
Written for a general audience, it deals with a number
of current, and potential future, effects
of global change — with an emphasis
on climate change —
on various health - related
issues.
GSA strongly encourages that the following efforts be undertaken internationally: (1) adequately research
climate change at all time scales, (2) develop thoughtful, science - based policy appropriate for the multifaceted
issues of global climate change, (3) organize
global planning to recognize, prepare for, and adapt to the causes and consequences
of global climate change, and (4) organize and develop comprehensive, long - term strategies for sustainable energy, particularly focused
on minimizing impacts
on global climate.
However, one (for example, the Times) must be successful at communicating an overall, accurate, and wise understanding
of the real aspects
of the
issue (
global climate change) as a context and foundation for then pointing out the invalid thinking
on both sides
of the
issue.

[ANDY REVKIN says: As I said in my talk, the main benefits

change in
global temperature would result ---
As many
of us seem to be saying (you might call it, pleading), the Times can and should play an important role in that, but it will have to «step up» its coverage a few notches
on this particular
issue, i.e.,
global climate change.
«The Science and Politics
of Global Climate Change, a Guide to the Debate» by Andrew Dessler and Edward Parson (Cambridge, 2006) is more comprehensive, gives a better - rounded brief treatment
of each
issue, is much better
on the extra science
issues, and more thoughtful than the books in Gavin's review, as good as they are.
A General Agreement

of core agreements

global warming over time and would enable a wide range
of other agreements

issues as needed to accommodate the interests
of nations.
Specifically
on the
issue of global warming from greenhouse gases and
climate change, the conference reached a consensus
on the likelihood
of a rise in the
global mean temperature
of between 2.7 - 8 degrees F (1.5 - 4.5 degrees C) by about 2050, but not
on whether such warming has begun.

However, contrary to this conventional wisdom, new nationally representative survey data analyzed by American University communication researchers and collected by the Yale Project
on Climate Change and the George Mason University Center for
Climate Change Communication reveal that Americans between the ages
of 18 and 34 are, for the most part, split
on the
issue of global warming and,
on some indicators, relatively disengaged when compared to older generations.
The bottom line is smaller
global population is plausible, but not until after 2100
