Penguin Group today announced that it will be changing the terms
on its library ebook lending program, and on Tuesday, April 2, will begin allowing libraries to purchase and lend ebook titles the day that hardcover editions are released, according to The Associated Press.
During the 2016 Public Library Association conference in Denver, a panel updated attendees
on the library ebook lending market and offered ideas to help patrons access more digital content.
The Society of Chief Librarians has said that Publishers» baseline position
on library ebook lending is of very limited practical use for readers using libraries.

ebooks and digital audiobooks in the patron's favorite reading apps and
on their device of choice.
With all of the emphasis
on digital content in
libraries, it is odd that
ebooks were severely underrepresented.
By demonstrating how

Overdrive has just signed off
on a deal with publishing giant Penguin, to have 15,000
eBook titles made available to Canadian
libraries.
It is not a surprise that the availability of
eBooks from African
libraries is limited largely to university collections with an emphasis
on streamed scholarly publishing content originating outside the continent.
89 % of
libraries offer
ebooks and the 2012 expenditures
on ebooks could hit $ 90 million.
The new
eBooks will be available for
libraries to purchase
on April 2nd and should give a dramatic boost in the sheer amount of great new reads for patrons.
