Jesus felt that the principles of Torah
on which shalom rests were summed up in Leviticus 19:18: «You shall
love your
neighbor as yourself.»
Much of the time for a few of us, and perhaps a little of the time for all of us, the self that we need to lose really is a «rebel» self that refuses to commit itself to live with God and
neighbor in
love and insists
on reorganizing the cosmos
as though the self were God.
To
love is to discover and complete one's self in someone other than oneself; an act impossible of general realisation
on earth so long
as each man can see in his
neighbor no more than a closed fragment following its own course through the world.
Redemption in this sense takes
on the form of compassion in the name of
neighbor love, but that's
as far
as it goes.
We try to get to know our
neighbors, whether they live
on our block, three streets over, in the next neighborhood or across town because
as followers of Jesus we try to unconditionally
love everyone who crosses our path.
I'm asking my self
on this issue is there a compromise that allows me to follow my beliefs to
love God and
love my
neighbor as my self.
Notice the objection with these teachings is not based
on some ambiguity making alternate interpretations plausible, since the Scripture affirms these truths with the same clarity
as «
love your
neighbor.»
The confession then goes
on to emphasize NOT
loving God with our whole hearts and our
neighbors as ourselves.
