For his dissertation research, he is working collaboratively with commercial fishermen at the northern Channel Islands, off Santa Barbara, to collect essential fishery information
on nearshore finfish inside and outside of no - take Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
She has worked with sanitation authorities on research pertaining to impacts of disposal on coastal waters, and with the research community and municipalities on impacts of storm water runoff
on nearshore coastal environments.
It is big, and it is growing, and that trend is all the more worrisome in light of rapid population growth in the coastal zones of the world and our heavy dependence
on nearshore waters for economics, nutrition and recreation.

When fish feed
on organisms that live around bottom - growing plants and
on the mud in the
nearshore areas (benthic organisms in the littoral zone), they accumulate less mercury than when they are feeding
on plankton in the open water.
Coastal and boundary current systems with a focus
on processes that link the

While temperatures
on offshore reef environments have been > 17 - 18 deg C (likely due to oceanic influence from the Florida Current), shallow - water and
nearshore environments have fallen well below 14 deg C (e.g., 10 - 11 deg C near Long Key).
However, our analyses highlight the need for increased research efforts
on the carbon cycle in
nearshore environments (Table 3), including δ13C and DIC sampling, and attention to biological and circulation changes in
nearshore environments.
