In light of the Supreme Court's ruling
on playground equipment in Missouri, should we expect more or fewer lawsuits
over school vouchers?
Critics of the publicly - funded
vouchers say the program — a favorite of
school choice advocates — would spend millions in state dollars
over the next decade
on primarily religious private
schools exempted from many of the accountability and anti-discrimination measures imposed
on traditional public

vouchers for serving kids, or if an Obama Administration plan to address suspensions is somehow a punishment to traditional district
schools that have been failing kids for decade after decade.
For example, Walker's budget proposes lifting the income eligibility requirements totally for any child not currently in the
voucher program and allowing the private
school to charge tuition
on top of
voucher for any families of four making
over $ 70,000 per year.
Evers earlier this year praised Walker's budget proposal, but until now the two have been at odds
over how much money the state and property taxpayers should send to
schools, the expansion of taxpayer - funded
vouchers and
on Walker's signature piece of legislation known as Act 10, which nearly eliminated collective bargaining for public
school teachers and resulted in massive membership losses for the state's largest teachers union, which has heavily backed Evers.
Conservatives have attacked the plan because of the limits
on enrollment, while opponents of
vouchers say they should not be allowed to expand statewide because
over time participation in the program will grow and take resources away from public
schools.
So proponents claiming the mantle of «education reform» have been quick to jump
on the one - sided election results as proof - positive of widespread voter support for their ideas, which include competitive charter
schools,
vouchers to transfer public education money into private hands, and harsh accountability measures to punish
schools and teachers for the circumstances they have very little control
over.
In short, it says that
voucher schools will have a positive impact
on Milwaukee
over the next couple decades worth almost $ 500 million.
All teachers will still be awarded raises from the same pool of money for traditional public
schools, and Pike, the union leader, worries that pool will shrink
over time, particularly as the state spends more
on private
school vouchers and charter
schools.
