The article goes on to link to my previous discussion and analysis of the Wegman Report's background section
on paleoclimatology, which indicated that passages had been apparently lifted nearly verbatim from Bradley's Paleoclimatology: Reconstructing Climates of the Quaternary, and then edited in a manner that introduced distortions and errors.
[DC: But the apparent plagiarism, and numerous errors introduced, also demonstrate clearly that Wegman et al did not understand the background material
on paleoclimatology and social networks, thus undermining the credibility of the entire report.
Although WIRES Comp Stat itself is completely unrelated to climate studies, the original trio of editors — Wegman, Said and Rice University statistician David Scott — had collaborated earlier on the highly controversial congressional report
on paleoclimatology known as the Wegman Report.

A new study linking
paleoclimatology — the reconstruction of past global climates — with historical analysis by researchers at Yale and other institutions shows a link between environmental stress and its impact
on the economy, political stability, and war - fighting capacity of ancient Egypt.
For example, I am patiently waiting for someone at the Guardian to address the serious misrepresentations of Oxburgh and Muir Russell made by Steve McIntyre at last week's panel discussions in the U.K. (Not to mention McIntyre's characterization of
paleoclimatology as little more than «phrenology» or his inability to answer a simple question about attribution of current warming — and don't get me started
on Fred Pearce).

paleoclimatology begins and ends with the poorly sourced figure in the IPCC FAR which was based

Coby, For what it's worth, here's where that «it was based
on one tree» claim likely came from: «McIntyre and McKitrick went back to the source of the Gaspé series and then to the archived data at the World Data Center for
Paleoclimatology.
Paleoclimatology estimates are based
on analyses of ice cores and other paleo indicators that are used to estimate temperature changes and forcing changes.
Paleoclimatology gives some limits
on how frequent have major variations been, but interpreting the time series is certainly very difficult — more difficult than the well known controversial studies assumed.
The
paleoclimatology community seems to be tightly coupled as indicated by our social network analysis, has rallied around the [Mann] position, and has issued an extensive series of alternative assessments most of which appear to support the conclusions of MBH98 / 99... Our findings from this analysis suggest that authors in the area of paleoclimate studies are closely connected and thus «independent studies» may not be as independent as they might appear
on the surface.
Even though their work has a very significant statistical component, based
on their literature citations, there is no evidence that Dr. Mann or any of the other authors in
paleoclimatology studies have significant interactions with mainstream statisticians.»
I deal with the spin
on a daily basis, while personally I have made my own investigations into what people refer to as climate science and compare it to other, less politicized scientific inquiries into paloeoceanography, paleogeology,
paleoclimatology, and of course the science related to our current ice age and what pulls us into periods of glaciation and what impacts trigger interglatial warming periods.
Whilst I defer to your expertise in
paleoclimatology I'm nowhere near as convinced by your arguments as far as negative impacts
on the ecosystem are concerned.
The latest massive effort in
paleoclimatology is the PAGES 2k project which has produced a global temperature reconstruction for the past two millennia - check out my article
on it here: http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/07/08/2261531/most-comprehensive-paleoclimate-reconstruction-confirms-hockey-stick/ Their results look identical to the original «hockey stick» reconstruction of 1999.
The story really starts with my first piece
on the Wegman report just over a year ago, which noted unmistakable copying of unattributed antecedent sources in background sections
on tree ring proxies (taken from Bradley's text book
Paleoclimatology: Reconstructing Climates of the Quaternary) and
on social networks (identifying Wikipedia, as well as and Wasserman and Faust as obvious sources).
In most cases, these range from about 2 to 4.5 C per doubled CO2 within the context of our current climate — with a most likely value between 2 and 3 C.
On the other hand, chapter 9 describes attempts ranging far back into
paleoclimatology to relate forcings to temperature change, sometimes directly (with all the attendant uncertainties), and more often by adjusting model parameters to determine the climate sensitivity ranges that allow the models to best simulate data from the past — e.g., the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).
Let's just say that your blithe dismissal of multi-proxy
paleoclimatology appears to be based
on ignorance of the actual science.
Paleoclimatology has its transitions too, but those were
on such a different time scale as to make their coefficients of disequilibrium essentially irrelevant to the current transition.
Paleoclimatology alone (he then defends himself), or radiative physics, or thermodynamics or... (he then is speaking

It has been shown that you do not understand the literature
on climate sensitivity, historical paleo - temperature reconstructions, and many others and none of this has stopped you from declaring the IPCC 2001 and beyond «hockey stick» graphic a lie, misrepresenting Dr. Pinker, misrepresenting the science of deep - time
paleoclimatology (notably the reference to the Ordovician), and many others.
