I spent my time dedicated to achieving each individual pose, obsessing over creating a
picture - perfect
sequence so that the yogi's around me would look
on with pride and welcome me into their family with open arms!
I've never even watched a
sequence of Indiana Jones and there is only one
picture that shows me
on the back of a horse — crying!!!
Despite some genuinely hilarious
sequences that, regrettably, are spaced too far apart, this meditation
on the things that matter in life is too slow and at times too forced to deserve the high praise it has been getting (including an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film that should have gone to a number of other more worthwhile
pictures).
To create these
sequences, Malick collaborated with the great visual effects artist Douglas Trumbull, who made his name with Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and went
on to Oscar nominations for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Star Trek: The Motion
Picture (1979), and Blade Runner (1982).
The smackdown
sequences are especially masochistic, though Bay and cinematographer Jonathan Sela shot most of the
picture on IMAX digital cameras, in 3D, so it looks better than the average postproduction 3 - D conversion job.
Accordingly, the parts of Sentinel that bog down are the parts that rely too much
on the cast to provide backstory and motivation when the best, most poetic bits of the
picture are the first ten minutes (including its credit
sequence) that tells all one needs to know without a word of dialogue.
To underline the point, director Matt Reeves frames a
sequence of Gary Oldman shuffling through family photographs
on his iPad, the glow from the screen quietly lighting the actor's tearful, joyful face; and then repeats the trick a few scenes later, with an entirely CGI character delivering just as complex a scene in total wordlessness, with a different glowing screen and different family
pictures.
Three technical caveats accompany the «film with alternate ending and additional scene,» as it's called
on the packaging: During the branched
sequences, which are accessible only when viewing Identity in widescreen, the
picture's stupendous Dolby Digital 5.1 mix switches to a much blander Dolby Surround recording, while James Mangold's director commentary, if selected, drops out altogether.
But that's what happened judging by this concept art for Shane Black's threequel, with the crash of Air Force One near Miami
pictured here
on a dark and stormy night, whereas the finished film sees the same
sequence take place in the middle of the day.
A brilliant
sequence in which Kenneth and gun - shop owner Andy (Bruce Bohne), marooned across a parking lot
on the roof of his store, engage in a game of celebrity skeet shooting (the zombie «Burt Reynolds» gets one in the brainpan, which, by itself, earns the
picture a recommendation) touches
on our relationship to the cult of celebrity in the same breezy way as its commentary
on consumerism.
It's not uncommon for most
sequences to feature dialog, music, and a variety of effects elements that must be married to the
picture in a way that does not distort or «step
on» the other.
Daniel Day - Lewis channels John Huston (whose Noah Cross in Chinatown is a clear template both as a character and a voice) in a literally volcanic performance that slowly builds to an eruption in the film's closing
sequences that either sends the film over the top into masterpiece territory or destroys the whole drama of the
picture, depending
on the viewer.
The Shape of Water wears its classic Hollywood influences
on its sleeve, up to and including a story that openly riffs
on the 1954 sci - fi - horror classic The Creature From the Black Lagoon, a black - and - white dance
sequence straight out a Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire
picture, and a main location set over a cinema that's playing Henry Koster's 1960 biblical epic The Book of Ruth.
On its twentieth anniversary, Peter Bogdanovich's critically - acclaimed, prize - winning piece is even more impressive thanks to the restoration of seven minutes of additional footage including a crucial
sequence (a pool table seduction of Cybill Shepherd) that was deleted before the
picture's release.
