The area and depth of the ponds depends
on sea ice age (internal structure as well as surface topography), and ponds that melt completely through are called melt holes.

Two new studies show the current is slowly weakening, so it's not threatening an instant
ice age, but rather colder weather in Europe, higher
sea levels
on the U.S. east coast, and depleted fisheries.
In this study, the research team excavated intertidal beach sediments
on the shoreline of Calvert Island, British Columbia, where the
sea level was two to three meters lower than it is today at the end of the last
ice age.
The team found that species of foraminifera living
on the
sea floor around the time of the
ice age contained more carbon than those that floated at the surface (Science, DOI: 10.1126 / science.1188605).
During
ice ages, which are mainly driven by rhythmic variations in Earth's orbit and spin that alter sunlight in the Northern Hemisphere, growing
ice caps and glaciers trap so much frozen water
on land that
sea levels can drop a hundred meters or more.
The land bridge forms during
ice ages, when much of the water
on the planet becomes part of growing continental glaciers, making the
sea level much lower than it is today,» explained Shapiro.
«There must have been significant melt - back of

In our new take

Below you'll hear from scientists with significant concerns about keystone sections of the paper —
on the evidence for «superstorms» in the last warm interval between

on the pace at which
seas could rise and the imminence of any substantial uptick in the rate of coastal inundation.
(The recent work of Huybers and Langmuir suggests that

ice growth / shrinkage and

Remember for a long time «pingos» were surface land features — odd hills

The expansion of

In fact previous climate warming after the last

By the time rising

The

Rigor et al. (Polar Science Center, University of Washington); 5.4 Million Square Kilometers; Heuristic This estimate is based
on the prior winter Arctic Oscillation (AO) conditions, and the spatial distribution of the
sea ice of different
ages as estimated from a Drift -

sea ice drift from satellites (Rigor and Wallace, 2004, updated).
Prediction is based

''... worked with two sediment cores they extracted from the seabed of the eastern Norwegian
Sea, developing a 1000 - year proxy temperature record «based
on measurements of δ18O in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, a planktonic foraminifer that calcifies at relatively shallow depths within the Atlantic waters of the eastern Norwegian
Sea during late summer,» which they compared with the temporal histories of various proxies of concomitant solar activity... This work revealed, as the seven scientists describe it, that «the lowest isotope values (highest temperatures) of the last millennium are seen ~ 1100 - 1300 A.D., during the Medieval Climate Anomaly, and again after ~ 1950 A.D.» In between these two warm intervals, of course, were the colder temperatures of the Little
Ice Age, when oscillatory thermal minima occurred at the times of the Dalton, Maunder, Sporer and Wolf solar minima, such that the δ18O proxy record of near - surface water temperature was found to be «robustly and near - synchronously correlated with various proxies of solar variability spanning the last millennium,» with decade - to century - scale temperature variability of 1 to 2 °C magnitude.»

As noted last month, this range depends in part
on the relative weight that the respondents give to «initial conditions,» e.g.,
age and thickness of
sea ice at the end of spring, versus whether summer winds in 2008 will be as supportive for
ice loss as the favorable winds were in 2007.

Sea rise is a millennium - long process short of drastic
Ice Age on / off flips, which are not at issue.
The changes in the
sea ice environment, and their consequent effects
on polar bears, are demonstrable in parallel fluctuations in the mean
ages of polar bears killed each year by Inuit hunters.
The Polar bears stubbornly refuse to go extinct, indeed the buggers are thriving, the glaciers don't appear to be disappearing,
sea levels have stayed boringly level, we haven't been subsumed by hordes of desperate climate refugees, the polar
ice caps haven't melted, the Great Barrier Reef is still with us, we haven't fought any resource wars, oil hasn't run out, the
seas insist
on not getting acidic, the rainforest is still around, islands have not sunk under the
sea, the ozone holes haven't got bigger, the world hasn't entered a new
ice age, acid rain appears to have fallen somewhere that can't quite be located, the Gulf Stream hasn't stopped, extreme weather events have been embarrassingly sparse in recent years and guess what?
Regardless, even the IPCC concedes that there was no significant anthropogenic influence
on climate prior to 1950, thus man is not be responsible for
sea level rise beginning 150 - 200 years ago, at the end of the Little
Ice Age.

Weyl built

Earlier research, based
on deep

Radiative physics says doubling CO2 adds a lot more forcing to polar latitudes than the Milankovitch effect, but you demur

When the last
