The Soccoro Islands offer little in the way of
shallow sites or colorful
corals and the emphasis is
on the larger marine life that congregates near the rocky slopes and pinnacles that rise from the deep water.
Many of the islands are popular to visit
on daytrips, but unfortunately in several of the
shallower sites we saw a lot of
coral damage from inexperienced snorkellers stepping
on the reef.
Fish,
coral, and even octopus prefer
shallow water with lots of light: the deeper you go the less there is to see so the Reefdancer stays
on top, while you sit in an air conditioned underwater cabin.

At Brimstone
Shallows, a deep cleft in the wall leads divers
on a downward spiral to an expansive
coral - rimmed amphitheater.

The visibility, even though limited, did nt keep the divers from encountering a Barramundi Grouper, a couple of Wobbeng Sharks, a Pygmy Seahorse, a Crocodile Flathead together with other macro life found (nudibranchs and flatworms)
on the hard and soft
coral present especially
on the
shallower part of the dive site.
Finally, towards the end of the dive, with the sun high
on the sky providing light, the groups spend a good amount of time of a plentiful
coral garden in
shallow water.
For the third dive we moved to Hatta Island, to a dive site called Batu Gollang, very nice wall full of over hangs and a garden of soft
coral on the
shallow plateau.

shallows, dive amid rainbow - hued fish along
coral reefs, or simply plunk yourself down
on one of the islands» white - sand beaches with a rum punch in hand.
