We place
special emphasis
on practicing equity and diversity in science
education.
The first half of the presentation covers the NYC Committee
on Special Education (CSE), including the structure and function of the CSE, roles and responsibilities of the CSE and the charter school, and best
practices for working with the CSE.
Among Losen's recommendations for the district are more regular monitoring of disaggregated data
on identification, placement, and disciplinary action; training of adults in multi-cultural competence; and the use of intermediate interventions before
special education placement and of alternatives to suspension (e.g., restorative
practices).
We serve millions of students with i - Ready ® (adaptive diagnostic, online instruction, and
practice apps for math and reading); Ready ® (standards - based instruction build from scratch for the Common Core); BRIGANCE ® (assessment and instruction for
special education, early childhood, and Head Start); and other programs because of our laser focus
on educators» needs over our own bottom line and a belief that thoughtful and continuous innovation leads to a positive impact
on classrooms and measureable growth for students.
We conduct research, refine our
practices and serve as the voice for
special education teacher educators
on the local, national, and international levels.
These
practices are: 1) inclusive
education is not a separate initiative from general
education, 2) students receiving
special education services are general
education students first, 3) decisions about student services are based
on individual student needs, 4) the district must raise its expectations for students with disabilities and end their social and physical segregation, and 5) the success of every student is the collective responsibility of all district educators.
Based
on a study of the
special education placement process in a large city in the United States and two studies in different regions of Spain, the authors offer a comparative analysis of the relationship between professional beliefs and
practices and the achievement of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students.
Themed training sessions for small or large groups of
special education teachers, general educators, and related support staff that focus
on such areas as leadership development, program development, group dynamics, essential tools instruction, advancements in
special and alternative
education practices, and the most effective methodologies and modalities for working with challenging populations of students.
Her areas of interest center
on supporting the implementation of evidence - based interventions by teachers and schools, including professional development (PD) and coaching models to reduce the research - to -
practice gap; Implementation Science, including frameworks across fields and factors associated with sustained use of evidence - based interventions; and, the application of MTSS across general and
special education, including Response - to - Intervention and School - Wide Positive Behavior Intervention Supports.
She publishes and presents
on special education law and policy, assessment, response to intervention (RTI) / multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), secondary transition services, and scaling up evidence based
practices.
The 2009 conference offered 13 breakout sessions
on subjects from
special education principles and
practices to podcasting.

practice, my proudest work to date has been my work as a pro bono attorney
on impact litigation filed by disability and

Twenty - three third - through fifth - grade general

special education teachers completed a yearlong online teacher professional development program focused
on improving MKT, instructional
practices for all learners (particularly those with disabilities), and practitioner inquiry.
In an effort to document and promote school models and
practices that effectively serve students with disabilities in charter schools, the Center
on Reinventing Public
Education (CRPE) asked the National Center for
Special Education in Charter Schools (NCSECS) to conduct two case studies about exemplary schools that respectively leverage available opportunities and mitigate challenges.

In interviewing parents who had experience with enrolling a
special education student in a charter school and faced exclusionary
practices in the early years of the RSD, Marcell found that parents perceive certain charter schools with an emphasis
on college preparation or STEM as not «disability friendly» and do not attempt to enroll their students (2010).
In electing to provide only the most basic
special education services, charter schools foist an additional burden
on local public schools, which, by law, can not
practice the same kind of «out - counseling» (Yell 1998).
