The Pre-Selection Adoption program identifies animals at intake that do not have identification such as a collar or microchip, that are less likely to be reclaimed, and who have an extremely adoptable personality, to be offered for adoption while they are being held
on stray hold.
If your schedule allows, you are encouraged to visit our dogs here at the shelter, as we often times have these dogs but they are
on stray hold.
If you are interested in adopting a dog / cat that is
on stray hold, they will be made available on the SIXTH day from their intake date.
Please note: Once an animal is brought to the shelter as a stray, it is
on a stray hold for 5 days.
When we left off on our story of Gabriel and Serafina, we were waiting to take possession of the dogs from the vet where they were being held
on stray hold and bring Serafina to Oradell for evaluation of her injuries.

held from 7 - 10 days, depending
on the city, for a «
stray holding period.»
While both groups are technically right, based
on the actual data and personal experience in leadership of an open admission no kill shelter, I think the law change to decrease
stray hold times will SIGNIFICANTLY increase the ability for shelters to save lives and support the bill in its entirety.
Additionally, keeping ID
on your pet such as tags or a microchip can extend the
stray hold period, the period which a shelter has to wait before making the pet available for adoption, giving you a longer time to find your pet!
Based
on this information it seems abundantly clear that dogs should be
held at least three days, but likely not more than 5 days, because as time passes, the likelihood of a dog's owner being found diminish rapidly and dogs end up assuming space in a shelter with very little opportunity for any potential outcome until the
stray hold is up.
The only building left
on the property was the garage, so in 1993, the garage was converted to a
stray cat
holding area (years later it was converted to the Small Critter Cottage).
He was taken to BARCS, the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, where he was placed
on a mandatory
stray hold until Friday.
We plan a path for each animal during their
