«It's very good because it places a lot of emphasis
on really using sequences to screen, rather than worrying about taxonomy,» says Jeremy Minshull, president of DNA 2.0, a
synthetic -
genomics company in Menlo Park, Calif..
«While previous molecular studies have provided simple snapshots of the gene transcript variations that are associated with the exposure of insects to natural and
synthetic chemicals, the
genomics approaches used in this study offer a significantly more complex perspective
on the biochemical and physiological processes occurring in plant - insect interactions,» Schuler said.
Research builds
on a series of recent landmark studies, at JCVI, which have led to transformative new methodology for
synthetic biology and functional
genomics
With these new optimized procedures, we would like to pilot a program, contingent
on the success of this study, to expose high school students to the field of molecular and
synthetic genomics.
The JCVI teams are focused
on a variety of
genomic research areas including continued work in
synthetic biology; sampling and analysis of the world's oceans, fresh water and soils to better understand the microbes living in these environments; and new analysis
on the human genome in the hopes of discovering new insights into disease prevention and treatment.
However, opportunities are emerging based
on new genetic tools being developed for human biomedicine as part of the new fields of
synthetic biology and
genomic technology.
