on urban entomology, insect behavior and chemical ecology.
In a second set of experiments, the researchers exposed some queenless
ant colonies to nonacosene by placing the fertility compound
on a glass slide inside the nest.
But when an
ant colony's nest is destroyed, the insects rely
on the advice of individuals, according to a study published online this week in The Journal of Experimental Biology.
The social parasite T. americanus carries out raids
on neighboring host
colonies in order to steal their young, often killing adult worker
ants and the queen in the process.
That means that nurse
ants must be selectively feeding larvae the hormone, depending
on what type of adult workers the
colony needs, LeBoeuf says.
They then matched up the
ants in a series of one -
on - one tests to see how aggressive individuals from different
colonies would be to one another.
To study this, the researchers worked with different
colonies located in Patagonia, Argentina, and measured the length of both outbound and inbound laden
ants, as well as the effect of experimental wind (generated by computer coolers in the field)
on larger and smaller
ants.
So
ants from the west coast of Japan fought their rivals from Kobe, while
ants from the European super-
colony didn't get
on with those from the Iberian
colony.
