The American Animal Hospital Association only makes this report available to veterinarians, not private citizens, and Maine's pet owners are unaware that the AAHA Guidelines state on Page 18: «We now know that booster injections are of no value in dogs already immune, and immunity from distemper infection and vaccination lasts for a minimum of 7 years based on challenge studies and up to 15 years (a lifetime) based
on antibody titer.»

on over 1,000 dogs and shows the duration of immunity of the core vaccines from both challenge (exposure to the real virus) and serology (
antibody titer results):
Owners of vaccinated dogs must still seek veterinary care immediately in the event of a bite, because 1) the type of snake is often unknown; 2)
antibody titers may be overwhelmed in the face of severe envenomation, and 3) an individual dog may lack sufficient protection depending
on its response to the vaccine and the time elapsed since vaccination.
Most breeders don't want to wait that long, and instead rely
on the «high
titer» vaccines such as Intervet's Proguard, which was designed to overcome maternal
antibodies.
If a dog is truly at a high risk of infectious disease, revaccination might be a safer bet than relying
on the results of an
antibody titer test.
A new study (2016) found that cats overdue
on their rabies vaccine often still had a high
antibody titer and did not need to be quarantined or euthanized if exposed to a rabid animal.
Based
on blood samples drawn
on day 0 of the study, several of the animals whose rabies vaccinations were out - of - date had acceptable and even high rabies
antibody titers pre-booster.
Results of subsequent challenge studies with these cats supported the earlier predictions of protection made
on the basis of
antibody titers.
