Sir James Jeans and Marcel Boll, and even convinced
believers like Guardini, have uttered expressions of amazement (tinged with heroic pessimism or triumphant detachment) at the apparent insignificance of the phenomenon of Life in terms of the cosmos — a little mould
on a grain of dust.
