Anderson Ranch celebrated their 50th anniversary just last year and continues to grow as a leader in the creation and development of and dialogue on contemporary visual arts in America.

Coming off a 25th anniversary year, the 18th Street Arts Center continues to support the creation of cutting - edge, contemporary artwork through residencies, which provide artists with the time, space and financial support to complete an existing project or generate new work before it goes on to theaters or museums.

It includes an essay by Dr. Stephanie Hanor, Senior Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and a personal narrative on the creation of one of Johns» light bulb sculptures by the artist and former Johns studio assistant Mark Lancaster.

The concept of absolute originality is a contemporary one, born with Romanticism; classical art was in vast measure serial, and the «modern» avant - garde (at the beginning of this century) challenged the Romantic idea of «creation from nothingness,» with its techniques of collage, mustachios on the Mona Lisa, art about art, and so on.

This public setting provides artists hailing from Texas and beyond a unique platform for the creation of new work in response to the site and its location in downtown Houston and offers passersby ever new and fresh perspectives on the most recent developments in contemporary art made in and about Houston.

With characteristic wit and critique, Yinka Shonibare MBE explores the contemporary worship of luxury goods and the behaviour of the banking industry while referencing well known iconography and art historical homage - most notably in his creation of a large tableau based on Leonardo da Vinci's «The Last Supper».

Known for his large - scale painting interventions based on vibrantly patterned Taiwanese textiles, Lin's practice has been hailed as a new approach to contemporary art and the museum through the creation of immersive and experiential environments.

The presence of the Morandi collection not only highlights the great influence of the artist on contemporary art, but also establishes a connection with Bologna artistic facts, with the museum history and with the reasons behind its creation, creating a strong link with the Permanent Collection.

Its focus on the convergence of art, literature and philosophy fostered the creation of group and solo shows that explored the Zeitgeist within the contemporary art scene in Paris.

Starting March 19, the creations of these innovators will be on view at the museum in «Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary, Art, Craft and Design.»
