Mr. Gilliam, who represented the United States at the Venice Biennale in 1972 and whose draped canvases have had a strong influence
on younger painters trying to rethink the medium, has only recently broken $ 300,000 at auction, though works by Mr. Gilliam on view recently at the Frieze Masters art fair in London were priced at up to $ 500,000.
In Morning Sky (1962), a painting made during one of Avery's summers spent in Provincetown in the company of Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Adolph Gottlieb, the nature of Avery's influence
on the younger painters is clear, as beach and sea represented on the canvas resolve into broad fields of colour, with a muted pink butting onto a serenely stormy dark blue.
His allegiance to the stretched canvas was so unlike anything else shown in France at that time — an era dominated, in terms of avant - garde painting, by the Supports / Surfaces dogma of the loose canvas (la toile libre, literally the «free» canvas, freed from the stretcher)-- that he exerted a powerful fascination
on younger painters even though they could barely figure out his work.
The search for fresh ingredients meant not only poring through the history of art, but also keeping an eye
on younger painters.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art granted Philip Guston (1913 - 1980) a career retrospective shortly before his death, when few discerned the influence his controversial mature work was having
on young painters.
MS: And had a profound effect
on young painters — Bob Thompson was largely inspired by him.
Rubinstein's essay had an enormous impact

painter and musician, had a focus
on young and emerging artists.
The influence of abstract expressionism
on Eggleston, partly through his friendship with the
painter Tom
Young, is addressed at points throughout the show, and it is important to recognise that perspectival lines, the balance of colour throughout a composition, and the presence of contextual details such as logos and pavements, are as important as the features, dress and celebrity identity of the subjects.
Rosenquist has received numerous honors including the Art in American
Young Talent
Painter in 1963, a six - year appointment to the Board of the National Council
on the Arts in 1978, and nominated as a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1987.
Now, at age 73, that is rapidly changing — her dreamlike, unfussy portrayals of ships aglow
on night seas, cave - painting - ready divers, and an existential Superman launching himself through monochrome skies have hit the moment with uncanny precision, seeming distinctly fresh and relevant amid the work of
painters half a century

painters, such as Francesco Clemente, Schnabel draws
on art history, current events, other cultures and religion for his imagery.
Though Reichman emerged when Abstract Expressionism was the reigning aesthetic in both the Bay Area and New York, the
young painter chose to create works based in his own style, focusing
on the intimate, quiet and curious in the space around him.
Puder especially has had enormous influence
on a generation of

painter died
young at age 43 in 1969 from a heart attack, but in his short lifetime he established himself as a major played
on the Southern California art scene whose work was heavily influenced by Abstract Expressionism and figuration, and often included socially political themes and sexual imagery.
Influential
on other artists after Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland first saw her work in the early 1950s, since 2000 her art has inspired a new generation of
younger painters such as Carrie Moyer, Jackie Saccaccio, and Mary Weatherford.
The immense influence
on generations of
young artists is additionally straitened by the fact that Eric Fischl is still innovative, progressive and one of the most influential figurative
painters of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
His remarkable show is small — less than ten works of art — but it throws unusual light
on current developments in painting in both a formal sense, as a continuation of New York School visual insights, and in a social sense, as a
young black
painter.
