What's next: The team is working to gather additional field data and perform further simulations to accurately address
aerosol effects on clouds.
When aerosol indirect
effects on cloud cover were included, tropospheric (anthropogenic) aerosol efficacy reduced from 1.14 to 0.99.
Aerosols can also have
big effects on clouds, for instance making them brighter so that they reflect more sunlight back into space.
The new study revealed that these particles,
whose effects on clouds have been mostly neglected until now, can invigorate clouds in a much more powerful way than their larger counterparts.
He calculates that to achieve the
desired effect on cloud reflectivity would require treating them with «a cupful» of salt per km2 per hour.
He also notes that while the total solar irradiance (TSI) only varies by about.1 % over a solar cycle, the solar UV varies by about 10 % and that
secondary effects on cloud formation may vary up to 30 % over solar cycles.
Put the two peases together: passing the invariable plane cause an
clear effect on clouds, and shifting the inclination in and out of the invariable plane might then also be expected to have an impact on cloud formation.
Their relatively good spectral resolution makes infrared sounders very useful for the determination of cloud properties (day and night), and their coarse spatial resolution has less
effect on clouds with large spatial extents like cirrus clouds.
Namely, they could not conclude whether cloud variations were mainly due to an
ENSO effect on clouds or the CRF.
Romakkaniemi, S., Maalick, Z., Hellsten, A., Ruuskanen, A., Väisänen, O., Ahmad, I., Tonttila, J., Mikkonen, S., Komppula, M., and Kühn, T.: Aerosol — landscape — cloud interaction: signatures of
topography effect on cloud droplet formation, Atmos.
At present, no transient climate simulation accounts for all aerosol - cloud interactions, so that the net aerosol
effect on clouds deduced from models is not conclusive.
As the photograph above clearly shows, radio frequency transmissions have a
profound effect on clouds that have been aerosolized by the spraying of toxic electrically conductive heavy metals.
While mid latitude aurora can be a function of increased solar output, the Earth's magnetosphere could be affected by planetary influence in isolation that could have
downstream effects on cloud cover.
Quantitative estimates of sulphate aerosol indirect
effects on cloud properties and hence RF were sufficiently well established to be included in assessments, and carbonaceous aerosols from biomass burning were recognised as being comparable in importance to sulphate (Penner et al., 1992).
Clouds are not a forcing of the climate system (except for the small portion related to human related aerosol effects, which have a
small effect on clouds).
Solar irradiance change has a strong spectral dependence [Lean, 2000], and resulting climate changes may include indirect effects of induced ozone change [RFCR; Haigh, 1999; Shindell et al., 1999a] and conceivably even cosmic
ray effects on clouds [Dickinson, 1975].
However, I am not optimistic — the specifics of the small scale physics (aerosol
indirect effects on clouds, sea ice formation, soil hydrology etc.) are so heterogeneous that I don't see how you can do without calculating the details.
The indirect
aerosol effect on clouds is non-linear [1], [76] such that it has been suggested that even the modest aerosol amounts added by pre-industrial humans to an otherwise pristine atmosphere may have caused a significant climate forcing [59].
Chamber research is focused on understanding the lifecycle of organic aerosols, including their formation, growth, aging (oxidation), re-volatilization, and
effect on cloud formation.
The small aerosols need to grow nearly a million times in mass in order to have
an effect on clouds.
But later studies suggested that aerosols could also warm the atmosphere through
their effects on cloud cover and the behavior of less well studied components of pollution, such as soot.
LONDON — Changes in solar activity, sunspots and cosmic rays, and
their effects on clouds have contributed no more than 10 percent to global warming, according to two British scientists.
CLOUD is designed to understand how new aerosol particles form and grow in the atmosphere, and
their effect on clouds and climate.
The paper he wrote together with Friis - Christensen in which he found a correlation between solar activity and clouds had a «slight» flaw: it ignored that the period of the study coincided with a big El Nino, and that large scale changes in ocean surface temperature are going to have
an effect on cloud formation.
ARM launched the Layered Atlantic Smoke with Interactions (LASIC) field campaign on Ascension Island to gather data on how smoke properties change after long - range atmospheric transport, as well as the smoke's
effect on clouds.
For instance — changes in upwelling of frigid sub-surface water having
an effect on clouds and that influencing global energy dynamics — as shown in satellite radiative flux data.
For the first time, researchers have developed a comprehensive approach to look at aerosols — those fine particles found in pollution — and
their effect on clouds and climate.
Have you ever considered the implications of solar wind and / or the lack of it having
an effect on cloud cover?
The amount is uncertain because global aerosols and
their effect on clouds are not measured accurately.
