It ranges from the NMWA's women
only collection and
exhibition - programme to an entire wing of the Brooklyn Museum being dedicated to feminist art; there's also The Metropolitan Museum of Art's decision to show work by lesser - known
artists like Helen Torr and Elizabeth Catlett that has never been on view
in «Reimagining Modernism: 1900 — 1950» (the rehang of their modern art collection); and there's the recent acquisition by the Tate of a painting by Mary Beale, who is regarded as Britain's first professional female
artist.
Prior to her trumpeted appointment, she'd made her mark on the Los Angeles art landscape at the Hammer Museum, where she not
only shepherded the first L.A. solo shows of contemporary visionaries Simone Leigh and Njideka Akunyili Crosby into fruition, but was also integral
in realizing the

exhibitions.

One of
only two women initially involved with the «Club,» an association of New York School

in numerous significant early

With the push for recognizing heretofore undervalued black
artists animating museums these days, this
exhibition — organized by Ruth Fine, a former curator at the National Gallery of Art,

While I understood Ha's work on an intuitive level at the time of the
exhibition, it was not until my visit to the
artist's studio
in the winter of 2008 that I began to fully grasp the depth of his earlier burlap and barbed - wire paintings, not
only as signs of military repression made evident during the late 1970s, but also as spiritual works focused on transformation and resistance that could be read as icons of the human condition.

This isn't
only a question propelling Gonzalez - Torres, but one that hangs over an elegant and contemplative

Typically when
artists are tapped to curate shows, such as Robert Gober with his presentation of Forrest Bess
in the last Whitney Biennial, they are given
only a moderate amount of space for
exhibitions that are viewed as creative curiosities.

in her support of other
artists, showing small
exhibitions of their work, hosting art competitions and amassing a collection of more than 600 works of contemporary American art.
