To celebrate the opening of new art gallery Whisper, they have generously given us a limited edition screen
print titled Hypnic Jerk (edition of
only 75) by Bruce French, who will be one of the artists included in Whisper's inaugural
exhibition opening on Friday 10th June.
Premiering at SFMOMA before traveling internationally, this major
exhibition reunites the unparalleled modern art collections of the Stein family, gathering approximately 200 iconic paintings, sculptures, drawings, and
prints by not
only Matisse and Pablo Picasso but also Pierre Bonnard, Paul Cézanne, Francis Picabia, Pierre - Auguste Renoir, and Henri Toulouse - Lautrec, among others.
Four additional
prints are also included in the
exhibition; Geisha (2003), Snow Pines (2004), Japanese Maple (2005), and Weeping Crabapple (2009), which were all
printed using
only the ukiyo - e woodcut technique.
Previous artists were the Scottish painter Peter Doig, who created «Siegfried + Poster Project»; the New York artist Julie Mehretu, whose
exhibition was called «Notations After the Ring»; and Elizabeth Peyton, whose series of paintings, drawings and
prints based on many of Wagner's mythical characters not
only filled the gallery but also various spots throughout the opera house.

In both
exhibitions, Schultz's attitude toward her selected objects» both identify and conceal their disappearance — a strategy that leaves
only visual traces, drawn sketches, and
print works that function as a visceral evidence of a process seemingly made elsewhere.
For many years, he showed this work
only to family, friends, and teachers, amassing about twelve years worth of
prints and stories before showing in a formal
exhibition in New York City.
The wide variety of materials that constitute the
exhibition (including collections of photographs, slide projections, periodicals, recent film and video installations, sculptures, and
printed works on paper) create numerous situations within which to consider not
only the materiality of images and the technologies that form their reception, but also the conflicted social history that lies under their surfaces and is inextricable from their origins.
The
exhibition presents thirty hand - painted gouaches inspired by India, which were completed by Hodgkin in 1990/1991, and which have
only recently been rediscovered at a
print workshop in Wiltshire.
The 53 paintings and
prints in the
exhibition tell the story of how Pollock, Ossorio and Dubuffet influenced each other through not
only their close friendships, but also through the sharing of ideas, techniques and even studio spaces... All three grappled with abstraction versus figuration, and each had an interest in process and materials.»

The space's shape initially made for a confusing layout; it was

printed gallery guide that I became aware of the intentional chronological flow of the
exhibition.
