Not
only is the
victim of abuse unable to bargain equally with her abuser, she is unable to explain in sterile surgical legal terms why she is unable to bargain equally with her abuser.
Also, one
of the problems
of child sexual
abuse is that it often takes many years for allegations to come to light;
victims often
only speak out for the first time in adulthood, and when emboldened by others.
Seeking professional counseling for children who have been
victims of abuse or neglect can be not
only helpful for the child but a support to the grandparent or kinship parent as well.
Victims of childhood (or any other kind
of) sexual
abuse can
only begin to heal when their story is acknowledged, when they no longer feel burdened by carrying the secret.

of dependent children.23 - 33 Compared to children in foster care, maltreated children who remain at home exhibit similarly high rates
of physical, developmental and mental health needs.34
Some
victims may experience more than one form
of abuse, while others
only encounter one core issue.
Abused children become adult perpetrators in numbers disproportionate to the rest
of the population, but this dire statistic holds true
only for those
victims who have not been effectively helped as children.
Not
only is childhood physical aggression a precursor
of the physical and mental health problems that will be visited on
victims, but also aggressive children themselves are at higher risk
of alcohol and drug
abuse, accidents, violent crimes, depression, suicide attempts, spouse
abuse, and neglectful and abusive parenting.
They see mothers who are alienators as «
victims» to be protected even when they have committed what can
only be described as a form
of «emotional
abuse».
As a systems therapist, incest survivor, and recovering alcoholic, I've lived through several stages
of our culture's attempt to come to terms with child sexual
abuse — as a
victim in the silent 1950s; as a therapy client in the oblivious 1960s and 1970s; and as a psychotherapist in the 1980s and 1990s, when once - dismissed accounts
of abuse filled my therapy practice (and my television screen)
only to be partly discredited within the decade during another swing
of the cultural pendulum.
It is also imperative that professionals remain cognizant
of the fact that heterosexual women are not the
only victims (and heterosexual men are not the
only perpetrators)
of domestic
abuse.
