As highly productive farmland
opened up in the Midwest and the Great Plains
during the nineteenth century, pressures on New England farmland lessened, permitting cropped
land to return to forest.
During times of low sea level the continents are emergent,
land faunas flourish, migration routes between continents
open up, the climate becomes more seasonal, and probably most importantly, the global climate tends to cool off.
Furthermore, the seasonal
open - water conditions along the Barents Sea continental margin might have been fostered by the inflow of Atlantic Water (Fig. 5a) that was probably significantly reduced but still penetrated continuously to at least the Franz Victoria Trough west of Franz Josef
Land (see Fig. 1 for location)
during the last 150 ka58.
These areas of
open water influence: (1) the
land by allowing more ocean waves and more coastal erosion, (2) Greenland outlet glaciers by exposing the glacier fronts to warmer ocean waters, and (3) the atmosphere by providing a source of heat and moisture
during autumn.
During the age of the mega-fauna, vast expanses of
land were artificially maintained as
open parkland by the ruminants and other grazers.
Driven primarily by atmospheric stresses, these ice bridges are formed when sufficiently thick ice «jams»
during the course of its flow between
land masses, resulting in a region of stationary compacted ice that is separated from a region of flowing
open water (a polynya) by a static arch.
However, private
land to which the public have a reasonable right of access (for example, a supermarket car park
during opening hours) is considered to be included within the requirements of the Act.
When the DuraForce

open on impact
during one drop test.
