Perhaps now that it has Kindle, Amazon will see its way to
open - sourcing
Mobipocket.
Some notable free programs that can
open MOBI files include Calibre, Stanza Desktop, Sumatra PDF, Mobi File Reader, FBReader, Okular, and
Mobipocket Reader.
MobiPocket Reader was unable to
open a couple of epubs I had and so was Uread that someone recommended in the comments.
Indeed some EPUB files (about 15 - 20 % of all files) failed to
open with
Mobipocket.

Stanza is by far the most sophisticated e-Reader application for iPad, as it supports not only the
open EPUB format but also the legacy
Mobipocket, PalmDoc (DOC), Microsoft LIT formats as well as HTML, PDF, Microsoft Word and Rich Text Format (RTF).
Porting of such software, like the
open source FBReader or the widely used
Mobipocket reader application, would give a big boost to the iPhone as an ebook reader and could arguably inject significant new life into the ebook market.
A couple of notable early absences are the Amazon - owned
Mobipocket reader and the
open source FBReader ebook reader software.
In a post on his blog, a hacker has published a Python script for the «Kindle for PC» application that converts
open e-books with DRM protection into unprotected
Mobipocket books.
This is a device that won't read the 1000 + ebooks that I already own; I can't read books encrypted for the Kindle on my other devices; Amazon has already abandoned my digital library once — they may be on the way to discontinuing
mobipocket support leaving me with a second set of dead files; the thought of my bookmarks and annotations stored on their servers while they extract statistical data is disquieting; Amazon's clout with publishers and pricing strategies may not leave them
open to anti-trust suits but they are having a negative impact on etitles available to me.
These formats include, but certainly are not limited to, HTML, PDF, AZW (Amazon's proprietary format for the Kindle), EPUB (an
open e-book format used by the iPad) and
Mobipocket.
