Denmark subsequently notified the Council of the European Communities of their decision to
opt out of the euro, and this was included as part of the 1992 Edinburgh Agreement, a Decision of Council, reached following the Maastricht Treaty's initial rejection in a 1992 Danish referendum.
And that remains true today and although
we opted out of the euro right from the beginning and very sensibly so, but we are affected by the euro and I feel really sceptical that they can solve to eurocrisis, I don't expect it to survive.
Not exact matches
Other states could remain members
of the Union but
opt out of some
of its integrating features, including the
euro zone and the Schengen Agreement.
And
of course there are ten member states currently not in the
euro — with the UK and Denmark with formal
opt -
outs from the
euro, Sweden with an implicit
opt -
out, and the other seven meant to join when they meet the criteria.
While the new fiscal compact treaty was clearly driven through by Germany, 24
out of the other 26 member states have signed up, even those not yet in the
euro or like Denmark who have an
opt -
out.
The four points were reportedly: an
opt -
out of «ever closer union»; an explicit statement that the EU is «multi-currency»; a «red card» system to allow a number
of national parliaments to join together to reject legislation from Brussels; and a reorganised system for
euro and non-
euro nations, which has been read by some as giving the UK «associate status».
