A European - built orbiter designed to seek out the source of methane on Mars slipped
into orbit around the red planet Wednesday after a seven - month interplanetary journey, but mission control lost contact with an experimental landing probe just before touchdown.
Just weeks before the historic encounter of comet C / 2013 A1 (Siding Spring) with Mars in October 2014, NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft
entered orbit around the Red Planet.
Although a mechanical glitch kept it out of the fray this time, its
polar orbit around the red planet allows MGS to keep an eye peeled for martian cyclones all year long.
«The concept is simple — transport astronauts from Earth to a Mars - orbiting science laboratory where they can perform real - time scientific exploration, analyze Martian rock and soil samples, and confirm the ideal place to land humans on the surface,» aerospace giant Lockheed Martin said in a statement released Wednesday, announcing its ambitious plan to place a «Mars Base Camp» in
orbit around the red planet as early as 2028.
NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft has detected two unexpected phenomena in the short time since
making orbit around the red planet — an aurora occurring deep in the Martian atmosphere, and an as of yet unexplained high altitude dust cloud.
At number 9: The European Space Agency and Roscosmos, the Russian Space Agency, celebrated as their joint satellite ExoMars with its Trace Gas Explorer (TGO) slid
into orbit around the red planet.
The Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) of ESA's ExoMars 2016 has successfully performed the long 139 - minute burn required to be captured by Mars and entered an
elliptical orbit around the Red Planet, while contact has not yet been confirmed with the mission's test lander from the surface.
The aerospace company Lockheed Martin late Thursday (Sept. 28) revealed new details for its Mars Base Camp plan, an architecture aimed at building a crewed space station
in orbit around the Red Planet that would support long - term exploration at Mars by astronautson 1,000 - day missions.
In 1993, NASA lost contact with the Mars Observer satellite, presumed to have been disabled by an explosion in a fuel line as the craft tried to slip into
orbit around the Red Planet.
The main engines (bottom left) will be used for corrections once the craft is in
orbit around the Red Planet.
Now, new research in the journal Nature Geoscience suggests that an ancient collision could have sent a ring of debris containing at least 100 small moons into
orbit around the Red Planet, which eventually coalesced into Phobos and Deimos — Mars's two current moons.
On October 19, the European Space Agency (ESA) and Roscosmos, the Russian Space Agency, celebrated as their joint satellite ExoMars with its Trace Gas Explorer (TGO) slid into
orbit around the red planet.
On June 17, the MAVEN mission celebrated 1,000 days in
orbit around the Red Planet.
This artist's concept shows the MAVEN spacecraft in
orbit around the Red Planet, with a fanciful image of her home planet in the background.
The Beagle 2 Mars lander is clearly visible in new photos from NASA's sharp - eyed Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) in
orbit around the Red Planet.
