The invariable plane, the plane that represents the angular momentum of the Solar System, is approximately
the orbital plane of Jupiter.
The orbital plane of Nix, Hydra and Charon lies at an angle of 57.5 degrees to
the orbital plane of Pluto around the Sun.
Based on the duo's calculation, they determined that a Mars - mass planetary object located approximately 60 AU from the sun, with an orbital tilt of eight degrees, would have enough gravitational influence to warp
the orbital plane of distant KBOs by around 10 AU to either side.
What that means is that something is influencing them, causing
the orbital plane of the outer solar system to warp.
Oddly enough, Oort Cloud objects were probably formed in a region of the proto - planetary disk that was located closer to the Sun than the Edgeworth - Kuiper Belt objects that persist in
the orbital plane of the planets (ecliptic) to this day.
In 2006, astronomers discovered a very dim («mid-range»), red dwarf companion to HD 189733 A of spectral and luminosity type M V. Observed at a separation of 216 AUs from Star A, the companion star has a clockwise orbit that is nearly perpendicular to
the orbital plane of transiting planet b around Star A (HD 189733 b or Ab).
«Its orbit flips essentially randomly relative to
the orbital plane of its star,» Cameron says, potentially turning over completely.
About twice a year the camera will capture the moon and Earth together as the orbit of DSCOVR crosses
the orbital plane of the moon.
The orbital planes of planets «c» and «d» around Star A are inclined at 30 degrees to each other (more).
In contrast, true transiting planets would appear clustered around a smaller number of Kepler targets if detectable planets tend to come in systems and / or if
the orbital planes of planets encircling the same star are correlated.
However, such an impact would not have changed
the orbital planes of Uranus» larger moons, which are also «tipped over.»

Axial tilt is an astronomical term regarding the inclination angle
of a planet's rotational axis in relation to a perpendicular to its
orbital plane.
The axial tilt may equivalently be expressed in terms
of the planet's
orbital plane and a
plane perpendicular to its axis.
In our solar system, the Earth's
orbital plane is known as the ecliptic, and so the Earth's axial tilt is officially called the obliquity
of the ecliptic.
The team's calculations also suggest two likely
orbital planes for the planet: one moderately close to the mean
plane of the solar system and near the mean
plane of the four eKBOs at about 18 degrees, and one steeper
plane, inclined at about 48 degrees.
The tilt
of the solar system's
orbital plane has long befuddled astronomers because
of the way the planets formed: as a spinning cloud slowly collapsing first into a disk and then into objects orbiting a central star.
«The planets are small, they have circular orbits, their
orbital planes are flat — it starts to look like home very quickly,» says Jason Rowe
of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.
Since the rotation axis
of Saturn inclines compared to its
orbital plane around the Sun, the ring opening angle to the Sun changes over a 15 - year cycle.
The differences were due to some electron
orbital's lying in
plane and others being out
of a
plane, an effect that does not occur in 3D bulk Fe.
There are 11 satellites in each
of six
orbital planes and their paths intersect roughly over the North and South poles.
The same kick can change the alignment
of smaller black holes and rock their
orbital plane.
In a paper accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal, lead author David Fleming, a UW astronomy doctoral student, studies eclipsing binaries, or those where the
orbital plane is so near the line
of sight, both stars are seen to cross in front
of each other.
Having three detectors also enables researchers to make a rough measurement
of the wave's polarization — a property that indicates how the black holes»
orbital plane (the
plane on which they rotate around each other) is orientated with respect to Earth.
Davis & Wheatley (2009) present evidence
of this limit that can be described as a line in the versus a-2

One phenomenon that Sathyaprakash is eager to observe is a «precession»
of the black holes»
orbital plane, meaning that their paths trace a kind
of 3D rosette.
But
orbital precession occurs only when two black holes have axes
of rotation that point in random directions, and it disappears when the axes are both perpendicular to the
orbital plane.
On March 5, 2015, a team
of astronomers announced that numerical simulations constrain the size
of planetary candidate Alpha Centauri Bb (with
orbital period P = 3.24 days; and semi-major axis a = 0.042 AU) to less than 2.7 Earth - masses at an inclination
of 45 to 53 degrees relative to Stars» AB
orbital plane (Plavchan et al, 2015).
It can be attributed to the crossing
of Mercury's
orbital plane and a comet stream (Killen & Hahn 2015).
Kepler sees only a small fraction
of the planetary systems in its gaze, those with
orbital planes aligned edge - on to our view from Earth.
The different Q values also allow the planets to re-align their orbits with the spin
of the star (so that the
orbital plane is perpendicular to the star's spin axis) on a timescale shorter than the
orbital period decay, thus explaining why there are many «aligned» hot Jupiters.
Furthermore, it also provides evidence that suggests that at least one
of the black holes may have been tilted away from the
orbital plane at the time
of the merger, the study authors added.
The Cygnus - Lyra neighborhood was chosen as the study area because it's well - populated with stars and lies high enough above the Earth's
orbital plane that the sun, Earth and moon won't get in the way
of Kepler's observations.

The true orbit is the shape
of the orbit viewed perpendicular to the
plane of the
orbital motion.

orbital tilt angle to be at a different orientation, but on average, they will be pointing perpendicular to the
plane determined by the sun and the big planets,» she added.
Subsequent observations determined that the planetary body has an
orbital period
of 3.63 years, with a semi-major axis
of around 2.36 AUs (slightly closer than Ceres's 2.77 AUs) and an eccentricity
of 0.090 and an inclination
of 7.14 degrees from the
plane of the ecliptic (NASA factsheet).
Climate oscillations evident in Fig. 4
of Hansen et al. [52] were instigated by perturbations
of Earth's orbit and spin axis tilt relative to the
orbital plane, which alter the geographical and seasonal distribution
of sunlight on Earth [58].
The two objects [Sedna and 2012 VP113] have similar values for one
of their
orbital parameters: the angle [w] between the point
of perihelion and where the orbit crosses the
plane of the Solar System [from south to north].
In the early 1990s, one study found that coplanarity between the
orbital and equatorial
planes of nearby binaries (within 100 parsecs or 326 ly) that are composed
of Sol - type stars (F5 - K5 V) «exists» for binaries with
orbital separations up to the average

of an energy transition such as an electron emitting or absorbing a photon (besides densities and occupancies
of states and incident photons, etc.)-- and how does refractive index affect this (it has to because the Planck function is proportional to n ^ 2 — has to be in order to satisfy 2nd law
of thermo...)-- and does it make sense to use an k, E diagram when electrons are not actually propagating as
plane waves — I mean, what is the wavevector when the waveform is not a
plane wave; is k a function
of space in atomic
orbitals?
That Planet Nine helps to explain the tilt
of the solar system's
orbital plane is another vote
of confidence for the planet's existence.
Obliquity is the angle
of a planet's axis
of rotation relative to its
orbital plane.
