The next - generation space telescope had previously been slated to launch into orbit atop an Ariane 5 rocket from the European Space Agency's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, in the Spring of 2019.

Kepler, launched in 2009, was reborn in 2014 as «K2» with a clever strategy of pointing the telescope in the plane of the Earth's orbit to stabilize the spacecraft.

The mirror will also be designed in a similar segmented approach to those being tested for the James Webb telescope, allowing it to fit within the fairings of the Delta - IV Heavy Launch Vehicle (pictured below) pegged to lift the gigantic telescope into its operational orbit.

The James Webb Space Telescope — which is scheduled for launch in 2018 — can be thought of as the «successor» to the Hubble telescope, which went into orbit in 1990.

On July 18, 2011, the Russian Space Agency launched a satellite into orbit that unfolded into a 10 - meter (33 - foot) dish radio telescope called Spektr - R.

Instead of launching the telescope with the sunshield in place, NASA is planning to unroll the shield once the craft is in orbit.
