ALMA has detected the complex
organic molecule methyl cyanide in the outer reaches of the disk in the region where comets are believed to form.

In two star - forming regions of the galaxy, ALMA picked up signals emanating from three complex
organic molecules, including dimethyl ether and
methyl formate, which had not previously been detected outside our own galaxy.
One such extra element is the
methyl group, a common structural component of
organic molecules.
New observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array (ALMA), however, have uncovered the surprisingly clear chemical «fingerprints» of the complex
organic molecules methanol, dimethyl ether, and
methyl formate.
