* If you don't want to make your own powdered sugar, you can use 1/3 cup store
bought organic powdered sugar in place of the maple sugar and arrowroot.
If you can't
find organic powdered sugar, you can grind organic sugar in a food processor until as fine as powdered sugar, which takes just a few short minutes to do.
Although you can do a glaze with
organic powdered sugar instead — just add a little plant - based milk to powdered sugar until you get the consistency you want.

Allow the pie to cool in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours or overnight, and serve with homemade whipped cream to which you've added a healthy pinch of both ground ginger and cinnamon (I usually add a
little organic powdered sugar to my whipped cream, too).
I'll also add, don't bother using
organic powdered sugar in your royal icing, it tends to mix up a very unappetizing shade of light gray.

We use a variety: maple syrup, raw honey, coconut palm or sucanat, organic brown sugar, organic cane sugar, and
organic powdered sugar.
To make
organic powdered sugar: Use a coffee grinder or mini chopper to grind organic cane sugar into fine powder.

I also seek out
organic powdered sugar, which isn't as bright white as typical powdered sugar, but once you beat a bunch of air into it, it brightens right up (see photos).
Maple - Vanilla Icing - In a large bowl whisk together 2 cups
organic powdered sugar, 3 tablespoons maple syrup, 1 tablespoon whole organic or raw milk, and 1/8 teaspoon sea salt.
Buttermilk Glaze - In a large bowl whisk together 1 1/2 cups
organic powdered sugar (make your own in blender or processor: blend 1 cup organic sugar with 2 tablespoons arrowroot until powdery fine), 3 tablespoons organic whole buttermilk, and 1/8 teaspoon sea salt.
Another reason to make sure you use
organic powdered sugar is because it normally contains some cornstarch which is very likely to be made from GMO corn unless it's labeled organic.
Look for
an organic powdered sugar - most (if not all) are vegan.
I also followed recommendations by Serious Eats to use
organic powdered sugar to yield a tastier royal icing.
I have to admit, I cheated and made icing with Amish butter,
organic powdered sugar, cocoa and raw milk:) Made my cane sugar free stomach hurt, but the kids and hubby were loving it!
Sprinkle with
organic powdered sugar, and serve.
The frosting was made using all real ingredients as well (organic butter, organic whole milk,
organic powdered sugar, organic vanilla extract, and cocoa powder).
To make this you need vegan butter, vegan shortening,
organic powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a little bit of almond milk.
