Whitehead rejected materialism and the dominant interpretation of science which was mechanism for what he called
an organic view of the universe.
Gregory of Nyssa's thought is still influential within the Eastern Orthodox tradition which has a more
organic view of the universe than the Western church.

I believe that one
of the best routes to the center
of Whitehead's perspective is to
view his metaphysics as an elaboration
of a basic value assumption in which the primacy
of process and the ultimacy
of constitutive relations reflect a drive in the
universe toward the evocation
of greater complexity, deeper intensity, and wider range
of contrasts within the
organic unity
of an individual or society.
The church opted for the mechanistic model
of the
universe, though in many respects the
organic view would have been much more supportive
of Christian faith.
The interesting question for us is why it is that the church in the West in the sixteenth century and ever since opted with the majority for the mechanistic
view of the
universe, particularly in
view of the fact that the
organic view is in many ways more supportive
of Christian faith than the victorious mechanistic
view.
