It should be known that I actually liked the Pang
brothers original flick, although I sometimes feel a bit guilty about that given that it is also derivative to other films that were popular to the time.
While
the original flick didn't dazzle, it looks pretty good compared to the limp Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
In fact, my lukewarm attitude toward
the original flick made me rather wary of the 1962 edition.
There are plenty of little references to
the original flick, including appearances by Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, but something else that we were looking forward to in the movie was a mini Freaks and Geeks reunion.
Nonetheless, with a lot of talent involved, I hoped the 2007 edition would offer a film that could hold up well, even if it fell short of
the original flick's quality.
And co-star Anthony Edwards also wants to be included — despite the fact his character died in
the original flick.
It's interesting to see the film's original director, Patricio Valladares, returning to direct the English remake — especially coming so soon after the making
the original flick.
Reprising their roles from
the original flick are the always - good Alison Pill, Kim Coates (the desperate coach), Elisha Cuthbert (Eva's humorously profane pal), Marc - Andre Grondin as Doug's lovably befuddled goalie, and the director himself in a smaller role than the first time around, but he still pops up to be all sorts of gross and childish.
Unfortunately, that wouldn't be the case with the movie's sequel, 1990's Die Hard 2, but I thought Bedelia added able support and emotional grounding for
the original flick.
