For myself, part of my resistance to the label of «atheist» was the social
ostracization and my failure to understand that «atheist» did not mean that I was close - minded to new evidence.
The same weapons are employed: shaming, threats of
ostracization, condemnations... I have no time
for such.
Critically, though, this had to be done
for a longer time than modern people would like, and importantly, had to be done consistently, and probably within a stress - free environment, where one could eat as much as one wanted without fear of

There are many things people will not say under their true names
for fear of ridicule,
ostracization, and yes, even legal action.
To be concerned about «legal action» means that your speech is not free but if speech is free then to worry about ridicule or
ostracization is to reject personal accountability
for your words and makes you a coward.
