The Queens Democratic Party met this morning to designate candidates for the fall
Assembly and Senate
races, selecting, among
others, Queens Community Board 11 Chairman Jerry Iannece for the 25th AD seat being vacated by Assemblyman and congressional hopeful Rory Lancman.
We'll also be monitoring the dozen
Assembly races across upstate New York and a handful of
other interesting primaries including the Albany County DA's
race and the Democratic primary challenges to Senators Neil Breslin and Tim Kennedy.
Among the
other topics were Rob Astorino's characterization of recent Cuomo comments as «
race baiting», the Vito Lopez matter and it's handling by
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, an Onondaga Lake construction project and the reports of travelers at Newark Airport who may have the Ebola virus (all in the Syracuse gaggle).
The three candidates in northern New York's 115th
Assembly District
race recently faced each
other in a televised debate.
Today, Tues., Sept. 9th is Primary Day in New York State, where
races include New York State
Assembly, New York State Senate, and City Council Bronx District 17, among
others.
But
other insiders suggested that frontrunners could include Yudelka Tapia, the party - backed female leader of Castro's district, and Hector Ramirez, whom the party picked over Castro in the 2010
assembly race.
The
other seven
Assembly races include three on Long Island, one in the Buffalo area and three in New York City.
The AEG scandal has now oozed over to the
other side of the Capitol and is infecting a state
Assembly race.
Republican
Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb earned a note of distinction by becoming the first major - party candidate to formally declare a campaign to unseat Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose formidable war chest and bruising political style have seemingly made
other potential candidates wary to enter the 2018
race.
California Senate candidate Kamala Harris is campaigning for
other Democrats in some key
races for Congress and the state
Assembly.
Most polling in the
race shows Booker with a large double - digit lead over Pallone and the
other candidates in the
race, Rep. Rush Holt and state
Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.
Other potential GOP candidates to take on Cuomo are Sen. John DeFrancisco of Syracuse;
Assembly Republican leader Brian Kolb of Canandaigua; former financier Harry Wilson of Weschester, who narrowly lost the 2010
race for state comptroller and served in roles for the Democratic Obama administration; Astorino; Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan of East Northport; and Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro of upstate Red Hook.
Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb is the
other declared Republican in the
race; Sen. John DeFrancisco is expected to announce he is running for governor later today.
A former Hyde Park town councilwoman who is in her second term on the Dutchess County legislator, Serino, 53, first emerged as a candidate for the 106th state
Assembly District but tossed her hat in the
race for the state Senate when controversies began to taint
other potential GOP candidates for the seat.
Syracuse, N.Y. — In Onondaga County's most - contested
race for state
Assembly, one candidate has been accused of sending jobs to China and the
other of funneling $ 700,000 in taxpayer money to his employer.
In a close
race in the Bronx, in District 13, Marjorie Velazquez faced Mark Gjonaj, a sitting state
Assembly member, among
others.
While all the bills would cover candidates running for governor, six of the individual measures would also close the loophole for different sets of statewide and legislative offices: all legislative
races in one bill, Senate - only or
Assembly - only in two
others; the
races for attorney general and comptroller in one bill, those contests individually in two
others.
The news release may have gotten more coverage than those from all of the
other state
assembly races combined, warranting mentions in music trade blogs, The New York Times and even London's Daily Mirror.
Other Races In the 96th
Assembly District, which includes Clarkstown, Haverstraw, and the northeast corner of Ramapo, Democrat Ken Zebrowski was re-elected after running unopposed.
Among the many
other races on the ballot were elections for State Senate and State
Assembly.
