The good thing is you don't even have to fly American
Airlines (although they are excellent these days) since you can collect miles as long as you fly their Oneworld or
other airline partners (which are —

Although British Airways does not pass on fuel surcharges for American
Airlines flights
within North America, they unfortunately do add charges for award tickets between the US and Europe on American
Airlines and most
other partner flights.
That advice goes for basically Australia, Asia and South America as well — you can use BA miles to fly on
